I'm wondering if anyone can help me find the serial numbers for my LP-E6 batteries for my 5D. I can't seem to find them on the batteries themselves. Is it embedded in a microchip on the battery? If so, how do I use my 5D to determine the number?

Thanks in advance.

Unless I am mistaken, isn't the serial number displayed in the camera's "battery status" screen?

There is a serial number on the flat side of the battery, punched into the sticker if my memory serves correctly. I once bought one from ebay and it lasted about a year. When I looked closer at it, there was no serial number and i determined it to be a counterfeit.

This is the way i've seen on batteries which came with my 7d & 6d.

Exactly right. I just checked my OM LP-E6 batteries. It's a little hard to read, but it is impressed into the silver area of the flat side.

If you mean the numbers stamped into the silver panel on the flat side of the battery, that is not a serial number. That is a date of manufacture that is stamped into the newer LP-E6 batteries. Older versions did not have this date stamp. All LP-E6 batteries do have a 4 letter code that shows up but that is also not the serial number.

The individual hexadecimal serial numbers are displayed when you register the battery to the camera. Genuine serial numbers can be both 8 digit and 7 digit. There are some 7 digit serial numbers that are fake but they will often share a common serial number.

bca8a8d is a known fake serial number you might see. mh27866 was reported as fake in a forum post once but it was probably a mistake since "m" and "h" are not hexadecimal numbers.

These are all genuine serial numbers

Here are 5 different label types with some showing the stamped date of manufacture.
