rx10 (would you feel comfortable)

have been shot in the past using Canon's 5D Mk II.

The RX10 certainly produces video that looks just as good as what that camera produces. A lot depends on the skill of the videographer.

The RX10 is great, I enjoy mine; but comparing it to the Canon 5d mkII is just ignorant.

To the OP:

No. I would not rate the video out of the RX10 as anywhere near professional grade. However it is easy to use, low cost (for what it does) and the video output is well above average (probably best in class) for cameras in this class.

Well, It all would depend on what kind of movie you are talking about and where the majority of the project would be shot. The RX-10 has just had a new update that gives it the XAVC-S codec, this now doubles the best previous video file from 28 MBPS to 50 MBPS, which allows it to have a little better low light sensitivity, and more latitude in Post Production with grading sharpening and other effects.

I have the RX-10, I'm blown away with how sharp this lens is. Even though the lens is a constant f2.8 aperture, due to the 1" sensor size it's difficult to get a shallow depth of field (subject sharp background out of focus) And this type of shooting style is very popular when telling a story through the film media. It's not just for aesthetics, it is used to isolate a subject to draw attention to it.

This is why the DSLR growth went crazy when video was allowed in there design.

I personally have thought of doing a film style documentary with just the RX-10 and some camera motion tools as a challenge to see how it will look.

After shooting with only one lens, I would love to see the same camera but with FF sensor, yeah it would be a monster, but Oh you could really shoot some killer video. It will never happen as there to many lens sales that would be lost, and it would be pretty expensive.

Curious if you would feel comfortable shooting a movie with just an rx10? Two friends want to see what we can come up with and that's one camera really like.
Absolutely! Not sure what you mean by movie, but Vimeo and YouTube contain 1000s of projects with this and other lesser cameras. With an interesting subject and good skill, the iPhone can produce entertaining results.

Best of luck with your project.

Couple weeks ago I took a video (with my RX10 and new XAVC-S codec) of my wife cooking up a chicken dinner in the kitchen, 8-10 minutes in length I guess. After I finished I immediately put it up on my HDTV and we were both were stunned. To me, the quality was just as good as those famous cooking shows on T.V., perhaps even better. Bad luck form me, the memory card died before I could xfer the clip to my pc. It was a Sony brand memory card within warranty and Sony U.S.A. very quickly issued a replacement. We will do a “do over” when we have the time. Point is: Don’t underestimate the video capability of the RX10. It is outstanding.

To answer the question: Depends on what you define what a movie is, but as far as video is concerned, yes! Absolutely I would feel comfortable shooting video with an RX10 and proud to show it.

Yes it is a real sleeper of a camera! By the way if you get a chance to look at any of Dan Carter's videos at vimeo.com I would recommend it, He really knows how to make the RX-10 sing, Very nice work. just search for Dan carter, RX-10 you'll see them there, great inspiration.

Oh, here is an excellent SDXC card, that is future proof, it can handle 4K, and it handles the new XAVC-S codec. I have over 8 of them, not 1 problem in my RX-10 and there reasonably priced.

Dont worry, your wife will cook again, and you still have the camera..

"you should have seen the one which got away!"
