EOS 100D AF point selection problems.

A friend of mine bought the EOS 100D (Australia). He bought it for its compact size.

He would like to set the camera to focus all the time in Single shot shooting with the centre AF point only. Focus, lock, re-compose, shoot. Very basic and old way of shooting. He is not interested in face recognition, Live mode or even movies.

It seems to be impossible to do, unless we are missing something. I am helping him by going through the User Manual, but can't find anything.

Could an experienced owner of the 100D help please.

Here you go Joe, this is a jpg of page 105 of the 100D manual.

Also here is a link to a PDF version of said manual: http://www.2cameraguys.com/pdf/Canon-EOS-Rebel-SL1-IS-camera-manual.pdf

P, TV, AV, and M modes only. If half press on shutter shows all focus points lit, then press the upmost right button on the back of the camera and turn the wheel to cycle to the single point you want.

This is not a permanent selection of the centre AF point. The centre point has to be toggled everytime before a shot is taken.
Weird, not on mine. I set a point and it stays there, even after powering off/on.

I keep mine set on the center point only and it stays there unless/until I select another point; just the same as with the 4 other Canon DSLRs I've had.

What shooting mode is he in?

One would think he is not using the M, AV, TV, or P modes but in his initial response to me when I told him he can only do what he wants in those 4 modes he states: "This is not a permanent selection of the centre AF point. The centre point has to be toggled everytime before a shot is taken."

His reply sort of sounds like he is using one of the 4 modes that allow focus point selection since none of the others will allow any selection ("toggling") at all. They just automatically activate 1 or many points as the camera wants and you can't select them or change them in the full auto or scene modes.

Guys, I am trying to help my 82yo DSLR illiterate friend in Brisbane to set his camera - over emails and telephone (I am in Melbourne).

I was only quoting what he told me.

Anyway, the procedure described on p105 of the comprehensive user manual should work.

thanks

Ouch. Tall order. Too bad you can't connect via something like Skype or Facetime. Awfully glad my folks can do Facetime! :-)

Best of luck,

Hmm, I set mine on the center point the day I got it and it has been there (or one of the other points I selected) ever since. Now, I only use Av and manual modes, so maybe it is something to do with the mode you're using?

Same here re: setting up center point AF from the first day. The o/p also mentioned single shot, which is set up in the menu >third camera icon > AF Operation.
