Hello.

I finally received the lens!

So far I have not had a lot of time to try it out, but I thought my first impression might be of interest to some of you.

Here goes:
  • Big, heavy and seems constructed like a tank
  • Perfectly recognized by my D600
  • The zoom ring is very "hard" (to turn)
  • The auto-focus is fast and silent (compared to my Nikkor 180mm f2.8)
  • The manual focus ring is tiny!!!
  • Reasonable sharp; gets better stepped down a bit
  • The OS seems very efficient (but then this is my first stabilized lens)
  • Decent bokeh
  • I find the DOF very good even just slightly stepped down
  • The distortion (24mm) seems reasonable to me.
The following pictures were taken (raw) today. I used Capture NX-D (beta, of course) for the processing; only the WB was changed. No sharpening / noise reduction.

Pictures:

 Sharpness wide open.
Sharpness wide open.

Sharpness stepped down to f8
Sharpness stepped down to f8

Sharness and bokeh wide open

DOF at f5.6
DOF at f5.6

Distortion at 24mm (please ignore the lack of sharpness)

So far I'm very satisfied with this lens. I'll update this post in case I find something which really bothers me.

Got this now almost a month ago, had initially some byuers remorse but when I finally got this beast on the camera and started taking photos it was all blown away! Just getting more and more pleased with the performance!

Yes, there is some vignetting at f4, and yes if you are looking for a small and lightweight lens, keep looking for something else, otherwise this is a gem! :)

Hi gents,

I like the images people post from their Sigma Art 24-105 f/4 lenses on Nikon FX bodies. They do appear extremely sharp in the center and contrast is vivid. It's also $400 less than Nikon 24-120 f/4. Sigma's center sharpness seems sharper from reviews and pictures I've peeped. I'm leaning based on image quality towards the Sigma.

Key concern to me are whether there are compatibility issues with D600 autofocus fine tune, light metering, and flash. I can live with the nonsense about focal length encoders skipping 50 mm, 80 mm, etc. Have any of you experienced any significant problems with Sigma 24-105 on your Nikon D600 bodies? Internet posts are riddled with naysayers wagging fingers about other Sigma lenses and Nikon bodies but I haven't heard whether this remains true for this specific pairing.

Thanks for any insight!

Dave
