Problem with my 60D

Hi,

I’ve run into a problem with my 60D that I can’t fix or make sense off. Hopefully it’s something really simple.

Everything went wrong after I used DSLR Remote Pro in Av mode to take some pictures at different exposures for HDR. The software worked fine and support says that you can’t reprogram the 60D using the USB connection so their software can’t be responsible.

Basically the problem is modes are not matching what is displayed on the mode dial and so the creative modes are no longer available. If I move the mode button so that the camcorder symbol next to the white arrow, to place the camera in movie mode, and the press INFO. button to bring up which mode the camera thinks it’s in. So for movie mode I see the settings / information (AFQuick, AWB, 1920, 25 etc) on the screen. If I cycle through the modes on the dial they don’t match the mode the camera thinks it’s in and some modes like Tv and Av can't be accessed.

On Dial - On Screen = Mode camera thinks it’s in

Movie - Movie

Night Portrait - Night Portrait

Sports - Sports

Close-up – Close-up

Landscape - Landscape

Portrait - Portrait

CA - Portrait (This is where things start to go wrong - ie. info screen does no change)

No flash in rectangle - Landscape (Displays mode as Landscape)

Green rectangle - Close-up

P - Sports

Tv - Night Portrait (should say Tv in top left of INFO. screen)

Av - Movie (should say Av in INFO screen but displays movie settings + viewfinder closed like movie mode)

M - Movie

B - P

C – P (dial now at other extreme and won’t rotate any further)

When the dial is set to M I’m able to “Clear all camera settings”. I’ve also cleared all “Camera user settings”. I upgraded the firmware from 1.1.0 to 1.1.1 to see if that would help but nothing seems to reset the camera back to how it was. Is it stuck in some sort of movie mode?

It doesn’t seem like a hardware fault, the dial is not slipping between settings and it won’t go past the end points. It seems more of a software settings issue but I can’t figure out what and there is always the possibility that something got changed while the USB cable was connected.

Does anyone have any idea what has happened or any suggestions on how to fix it? Is it possible to do a full hardware reset on the 60D? Please let me know if there are any other tests I can run to try and diagnose the problem.

Thanks,

Ian

There are two places where you need to clear settings.

You need to both Clear Camera Settings and Clear Custom Functions.

Try that and let us know if that worked.

Hi,

I’ve done both “Clear Camera Settings” and “Clear Custom Functions”. In the C.Fn I: Exposure -> Exposure level Increments I set it to the second option 1:1/2-stop and after “Clear Custom Functions” it had reverted to the default 0:1/3-stop so I’m sure that it worked. In the "Clear Camera Settings" after selecting and clicking OK I get the "Busy....Please wait" message then it returns to the "Clear all Camera Settings" menu item which is highlighted.

It sounds to me like the software did mess up your camera.

Unfortunately the 60D has an internal back-up battery, so clearing everything by removing both batteries isn't practical.

I would contact Breezesys support again, and ask them for a better answer than 'we didn't do it'. Mention that unless the problem is resolved you'll be posting your problem and looking for help, on every photographic website you can find.

Unless you are in the UK, practical recourse is probably limited to posting everywhere you can online about your problems with the software.

I am in the UK. Is there a better option to get a solution?

If a follow up contact with Breezesys does not result in a satisfactory resolution, I would have an attorney write them a letter.

That alone will probably be enough to motivate them to work with you and find a solution.

You can try taking your main batteries out, and leaving the camera for a week and see if that drains the internal battery enough to clear the camera settings. I've read everything from it takes 2 days to 2 months to exhaust the back-up battery.

If you have a local camera repair facility (not just camera store) they might be able to do a reset, otherwise I think your stuck sending the camera into Canon to have it reset.

edit: this ones a long shot, but, one other thing you might try is using another dslr control program like the Android dSLR Controller from Chainfire, and see if that resets what the Breezesys program messed up. (I'm assuming you have already tried using the Breezesys software again to restore your camera.)

I would suggest calling Canon. It seems unlikely that camera control software could accidentally change the firmware or damage a switch. I'm guessing it's a broken control dial that happened to coincide with the camera control software.

I don't believe it changed the firmware, but, I do believe it may have changed the internal settings of the camera. Most other cameras, you could pull both batteries and be fine.

There are documented cases of programs like FoCal leaving the camera tweaked if not exited properly.
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3228235#forum-post-41900956 I've experienced that one myself on my 7D. All I had to do was pull the main battery and the backup battery, let the camera sit for a couple minutes, and it was fine.

But, you might be right about it being a broken control dial.

On the one hand ... I too find it hard to believe that software could mutiliate your 60D's system down a USB cord like that. On the other hand ... since you are in the UK, talking directly to Breezesys is a very good bet, since you are on the same time zone and speak the same language. (It would be a smart move even if you weren't, come to that).

I once met Chris Breeze on holiday, he's an exceptionally nice man, and I bet if you use their customer support contacts you will end up talking to him pretty quickly. Even if it's not the software's fault, I would be surprised if he can't help you. He was writing embedded software for DSLR imaging a loooooong time ago and he really knows his stuff.

Hi, I have the same problem in my 60D, have you manage to solve the problem?

Thanks,
