This lens really is worth its price. It delivers excellent images, with solid IS performance, and very, very sharp images across the entire frame. It is great for general-purpose walk around use for indoor/outdoor combination photography. The long end is a bit short for pure outdoor work, but for one lens that you can use for 90% of the situations you will run into, this is it.
Some swear the lens pulls in dust, while others disagree. I'm firmly in the "disagree" camp, as I have had mine for over 3 years, and have had no issues at all with it.
The only downside for some beginners is getting used to the weight of the lens over a kit lens. With a non-rebel body, the weight balance feels perfect though.
Problems:
The build quality is not what you expect for the price. It is good and solid, but it is still plastic and not metal, as it should be for the price. Also, my zoom ring has started to get tight and has begin to stutter over time. It may be time to send it in for service.
