Your vote? (Might help if you have decent knowledge of the choices dating back to the G1)

I'll concede my choice after this thread is up a while.

First off, man, you have too much time on your hands. Second, G12.

All Canon G cameras were the best for its time, except the G15 and G1X (if you count it as a real G). Why not G15 and G1X? Simple. They have a CMOS sensor! My first G was G2 (still have it and it still rocks). My last G is G12. Because of the switch to a CMOS sensor, I'm no longer interested in G-series cameras. There are better CMOS-based cameras out there.

Well I own the G15, my first G. Let me see, I will pick the G15.

I agree. Back in the day, the G2 was a revolutionary camera. In fact, the G2 made me switch to digital from film (I"m back to film now though). The G3 was even better, and many people will say that the G3 was a real breakthrough, but I beg to differ. The G2 was the real rebel, the rest of the G-series cameras followed and improved upon the founder.

Yes , something of a game changer that led to commercial success with the G series ; in some ways similar to the risks Fuji has taken with the X cameras.

Contrast that with today's lacklustre design philosophy of the G1X and EOS-M both technically sound but uninspired.

I had one and fully agree. I had 12"x18" prints made from my G2, a 4MP camera, that I still don't believe because of the very good quality.

My first digital camera was the G5, and that's the only G series camera I've owned. After that it has been DSLRs and superzooms (including the Pro1), because I consider an accurate eye-level viewfinder to be very important.

Canon G's (e.g. G5) used to have a wireless remote control, and a buit-in software intervalometer, as standard equipment.

Hi,

I wasn't interested in G's before they had a 28mm (equiv) lens. (I bought the S60 instead of the G? in 2004 just to get the WA zoom.) G10 too noisy. G11 didn't inspire. Bought a G12 and still like it. Then bought a G1X and appreciate its bigger sensor even more.

I don't think it's really fair to include the G1X as a competitor. It's a different concept despite the brand and ergonomic similarities and it requires some different thinking in use....

The only down side to this progression is that I've learned to like the big sensor/small camera combo and am now inspired to look at APSC MILCs - they aren't a lot bigger. For me, the one that appeals with classic controls, 100% EVF, and manual zoom and focus rings, is the Fuji XE1. Great lenses too. It's about the same size as the G1X with the lens out in the 'on' position and not a lot heavier. Pricey though.......I haven't taken the plunge yet. I'm interested to see the EOS M version 2 and any upgrade to the G1X (if there is one).

Cheers, Rod

The Canon PowerShot G1X, without any doubt whatsoever, is the best G-Series camera made.

The G2 was a ground breaking camera when it was released and nothing came close to it at the time.

I started with the G1 before moving on to G7, G10 and G1X... my vote goes to the G10 for I still having it and enjoy using it in good light...

My vote is for the G12, seems like it has the best of all G’s included and the most well rounded.

Things I like: swivel LCD, CCD sensor, OVF, very accurate AF, all the external controls I could want, decent video. I looked at the G15, but don’t think the CMOS sensor is as good as the CCD in the G12. Although it may be faster, I am more interested in IQ more than speed, for me anyway.

I do like the faster lens and AF of the G15, but since the IQ does not seem any better (to me), it was not enough for me to upgrade. I sure hope the G16 will come with a larger/better sensor to go with all the enhancements the G15 received. The G1X does take very good images, but they went overboard with the size of the sensor, giving it too many compromises for me. If or when actual IQ becomes substantially better than my G12 in the next G series camera, I would be interested in upgrading at that time. Right now, I think the G12 is the classic all purpose, travel camera and takes really great pictures!

If someone like me is not upgrading but buying new, is the IQ of the G15 about the same of the G12? I do like articulating screens, but think I can live without it for the faster lens/AF.

I had a G11 and really liked it, traded for a DSLR. Now I can afford a second camera and I want another Canon G.

I had decided on the G15 until I saw some of you talking about the sensor. Now undecided again!

Thanks,

Randy
