I plan on taking a shortish trip to these places (8 days) and will have a rental car. This is my 1st time there so I do not know what to expect.

This is what I own:
7d with 10-22; 17-55; 24-105L; 70-300L.
G1X with Lensmate and cp filter.
G12
580EX Flash

I guess it will be hot and I don't want to be mugged.

I'm thinking of going light with:

7d, 10-22, 24-105, G1X, no flash
or
7d, 17-55, G1X
or
just the G1X (but will I regret not having the 7d?)

All advice and ideas are welcome!

You can do it with just the G1X. Very rarely will you miss the 7D's speed or OVF. Or you can take the 7D and the 17-55. Depends on how light you want to travel and who's traveling with you. With my kids, no point in taking all that DSLR gear because at their pace I could hardly change the lens or do any other sort of meaningful search for the best place to take pictures. Try the G1X alone, you will be surprised (and think about the dusk/dawn/night shots you will be able to make without tripod in Venice).

I just got back from Venice, Florence, various Austrian cities, and Paris and just took a G1x...don't regret it one bit!

Pics are jpegs straight out of the camera...could use some post processing as others have pointed out.

Thanks guys! I believe the G1X is the right decision. As the IQ is not an issue, might as well travel light and worry free.

Would anyone would recommend a Gorillapod for some night shots or is that not even needed?

Btw nice pics of Venice!

Works for me! I like your shot of Venice at night (2) ;)

Agree with mcslsk. All you need is the G1X. Mine is with me on all my travels, the rest of the kit stays at home. Have a great time - look forward to your pics.

Will do!
