Thought to share some bird shots that I took manually with a 600mm refractor scope lens, mated to my Nikon D3s.

Its my first outing with that "lens"

Most shots were tens of meters away, and one was taken, at least 1000m. The lens coped better than I thought.

Hope you like them.

Good captures with a MF lens.
I liked the most the heron shots. What is the model f/ number?

I used a Skywatcher ED80 DS PRO 600mm f7.5 refractor scope with 2" max dslr T Mount, and 50mm 2" extension tube for these shots.

It was connected to my D3s FX sensor, which required 2" parts to get rid of any vignetting, as 1.25" tubed parts are better for DX sensored dslr's.

The Grey Heron shot was shot at approx. 25 meters away and cropped a little.

I am very happy with this bang for bucks 600mm alternative! Even with the manual focusing.

Takes some getting use to, and then its pretty easy to get more and more success rate shots.

Cheers

Here are a few more test shots that i did today, with the above lens resting on a wooden ledge and handheld. Very lightly PP.

These guys are barely visible with the naked eye, on the other side of the lake and up the hil.

The gull was approx. 10m away

The black headed gull shot was at least 50m away.

The Robin shot was probably about 18ft away.

I like them very much. I am surprised by not so many responses, I guess people don't realise just how difficult some of these shots would be to get, especially when the results are as good as they are.

I think the person in the blue jacket is a female, otherwise you caught him making a "peepee". But then again, it would be strange that the other persons behind the fence are watching ;-) ....Nice combo....a bit dark, but this can easily be solved by PP.

Thanks lance B.

Its always been like this for me, and I don't feel the family/friendly kinda warm feel as i do in other forums. I post my stuff like many others do, to share, C&C, and gain ideas etc...
But I still love reading and learning from you folks in here. :)

Its very challenging when I use the Skywatcher ED80 to manually shoot my shots and love it!

Those last handful of shots were taken on a windy, very dull afternoon, scope resting on a window ledge.

I've never worked that hard before, when using a 'lens" but using this combo is such good value for that little bit of inconvenience.

I can't afford those monster Nikon telephotos! I'd have to remortgage the house. hehehe

Have a nice day!

Hahaha! That could very well be the case.

I see shears or tools of some sort, to the right and what looks like branches or trees that have been trimmed down?
Maybe they are volunteers of the country park?

Thanks

I would suspect that if Gibbs (NCIS) was a photographer, he would be using a similar rig. ;)

Thanks for sharing images from your unique 600mm "lens".

p.s. It would nice to see a shot of the "rig" too.

@dwa1,
At least Gibbs would love the camo bandage! hehehe
here's a few pictures of my rig.

I have since changed the grip tripod head to my video pan and tilt head, which is much sturdier.

Thanks.

Wow. That's quite a rig Jeff.

You would need the "mother of all Cotton Carriers" for that set up!

Yes, Gibbs would love the camo wrap.

Thanks for posting the images. Good "hunting" Jeff. ;)
