Sky 1A vs UV filter

I just received a Marumi UV filter today from The Filter Connection, largely because of the recommendations I've read here. My main use for it is as in-place lens protection. But the literature that came with the Marumi states that the UV filter is used in B/W photography, while the Skylight 1A is recommended for color photography and lens protection. Naturally, I'm doing mostly color photography with my CP990.

So, my question is, is this the right filter for the job? I use a Skylight 1A on my old 35 mm, but I've never even seen these for sale in a 28mm format.

Thanks for any help. By the way, I've been lurking here for a couple of months and you folks have helped me with any number of questions. Great site.

Yes, it's right for the job. If you are really picky the 1A is slightly warmer and the UV is slightly cooler. Unless you have two photos side by side and spend hours analyzing them, you won't notice the difference. Either one is good for lens protection.

Yes and No. A UV filter absorbs UV rays to some degree (e.g., 75% to 99%) depending on its type. With a multi-coated one like the Marumi's, you will see the differences. Take this filter to a waterfront or a high elevation place and photograph some people. Then, you will see the skin tone differences. UV is not only for protection and B/W, it is also a general purpose filter. However, haze filters is a different story.

You are right. To the best of my (limited) knowledge, no Skyligh 1A/1B exits with a thread size of 28mm. A 28-37mm step-up ring is required.

As noted in another reply I heartily recommend you get a 28-37 step-up as you can then use a vast array of 37mm filters. The Sky 1B is regarded as the better nowadays (for some time) as against the 1A so I again suggest you go for the 1B. For practical purposes you'd hardly see much difference with or without in good bright conditions but there is probably a 'teeny' bit of warmth PLUS of course the lens protection which is the main thing. The 37mm holder CAN be a slight disturbance as it intrudes a little in the optical viewfinder but I guess that's not used a lot and I've not found any problem as I have a 28-37 permanently on my 950/990. It acts as a great little lens shade !!
