Supercross - Dodger Stadium

Beautiful shots! At what ISO did you shoot?

You inner redneck is quite talented! Nice and clear with gorgeous colors. I bet that was a really fun event to shoot with lots of challenges.

I saw photogs down next to the track, but I'm sure they had credentials.

Great shots! Love the colors! How was the noise before PP?

Congrats!

When you get down to the nuts and bolts of photography, the results depend on the 'nut' behind the camera!

See the 'Gear List' in my 'Profile' for my current equipment.

I'm a Nikon buff, but I have to tell you those photos are really nice , especially the first one is excellent . Thanks a lot for sharing. Canon makes great cameras .

Those are actually just extracted JPEGS. I shot in RAW, but the images didn't look too bad so I just used the JPEGS. To my eye, the first shot with the 5DII (also at ISO 3200) looks much cleaner than the 7D shots, but that is to be expected with the larger sensor. However, the 7D Servo and frame rate are so much better that I am happy to live with a little extra noise in a situation like this.

Great shots. I'm kind of surprised at the amount of depth of field you have on some of these, what kind of f-stops were you using?

almost all were at 5.6, which is wide open on the 100-400L beyond about 200mm. I would have loved to have used my 300 2.8, but I didn't think they would let me bring it in :-)

I'm 40 mins away from Dodger Stadium and would like to attend the next time.
I'm curious if any one gave you a problem because of your gear.

BTW, you did a great job from your seat!

Dodger Stadium has never given me grief about my camera, and I've shown up with the 1DIIn and my 100-400 before. They are more strict about bag size. FYI, Supercross will be at Anaheim Stadium in a couple of weeks.

Great shots man. I can't believe how much more clarity the first pic taken with the 5dmk II has compared to the 7d. This is the first time I have noticed a huge difference between the 2 cameras with regular jpeg sooc. I always thought it would have been a very small difference between the 2, but the clarity/ sharpness in image one is 5-10x better than the 7d at iso 3200. Great shots man. I would have shot the rest of the images on the 5d if I knew the IQ would be that different. Awesome images man!

Are you serious? How can you compare images taken with two different lenses with completely different settings? I absolutely guarantee you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two cameras at the size the original poster posted the pictures at if there was a direct comparison with the same lens and settings.

Yes I am serious. Look at the noise levels and blotchy reds and blues in the first pic compared to the others. I didn't even know he used the 5d until I went back through and read the post again. It looks like he used the same lens and setting for the different cameras. I am not knocking the 7d by any means, I have 2 of them, 60d and a 1d MK III and this type if situation is where the full frame sensor really shines compared to any crop sensor. Others have pointed out in this thread that the first pic really stands out. I am not sure what's up with the hostility, but I jut stated IMO that the first pic looks much more clear, sharp and overall much better IQ compared to the rest of them. Calm down, it's just my opinion.
Edit
If you read what the op said.....

Then you see I'm not blowing things out of proportion. The 7d is no slouch, which is why I have 2 of them. But this was the first time I noticed a big difference between the 2 in these forums in a real world application. I don't own any full frame camera yet because I didn't think there was enough of a reason to upgrade, but if these results are typical I might sell on of my 7ds and upgrade to a 5dmk II or III.

I actually brought my 5DII along because I was concerned about how well the 7D would perform at 3200 with the 100-400L. I use the 7D for football as a second camera, but I've always had a 70-200 2.8 lens on it, so I never had to go above ISO 1600. One time I shot a stage play with both cameras and was very disappointed with the IQ of the 7D at 3200. Anyway, I shot the first few shots with the 5DII to see how well it kept up with the action (not very well) and then switched to the 7D. I agree with ScubaSteve that the 5DII shots are much cleaner and, to my eye, have a much more pleasing texture to them. That is not a knock on the 7D, it's just a fact of life when you compare a crop sensor to full frame.

And yes, I used the exact same settings and lens (100-400) on both cameras. For the record, I would rather have the speed and focus ability of the 7D in that situation than the cleaner image of the 5D. Those 7D images look perfectly fine to me.

It looks like we might be in luck come March. If the rumors are true about the 5d III's specs, it will have the 7D's AF system. What more could we want? I just hope they keep it under $3k.
