Nikon D4 announced!!! Officially!!

Here we have Nikon's new flagship DSLR selling for a suggested retail price of about $6000 and yet, they can't include a registered full version of capture NX-2 (unless you already have it, in which case it will include the 2.3 upgrade)????
Seems a bit miserly to me.

I have a question. I can remember Thom Hogan speculating about spectacular AF improvement in the D4. That was a couple of years ago. The way he spoke about it then was as if we had to expect a complete re-think of the AF module. Do we see that here? Or was that development just not ready? Or did it die for other reasons?

Eric.

The new features and advantages in the D4 will be thoroughly discussed. I've noticed a few new inconveniences or steps backward which have cropped up.

Some negatives from the NikonUSA comparison D4 vs. D3s (please correct me if I'm mistaken):
  • The new battery is CIPA rated for 2600 shots in the D4 vs. 4200 for the EN-EL4a/D3s package
The new battery is indeed more powerful than before at 2000 mAh compared to 1900 mAh.
  • Interchangeable focusing screens are not currently listed in the D4 specs table
  • Only 1 standard (non-XQD) slot. If you want to use the second card slot for data protection, you will need to stock both standard CF and XQD. There is not backward electrical compatibility between the two card formats. And until XQD cards and readers appear on the market, the second card slot is essentially unusable.
Yeah, some people always create problems even if there are no at the beginning.
  • No 720P/24 video format listed. 24FPS is extremely important for the professional movie crowd. Whereas the complaint had been lack of 1080P/24 support, the answer is 1080P/24 without 720P/24. Some folks with 720P editing flows will be forced into down-converting from 1080P to 720P.
Yes! From the spec: 1920 x 1080 (30, 25, 24 fps), 1280 x 720 (60, 50, 30, 25 fps), 640 x 424 (30, 25 fps)
As you can see 720p @ 24 frames

What about being just a fraction more humble the very first day after Nikon has launched their new camera?

The availability (or lack) of XQD is a short-term problem. Nine months from now the grumbling will have mostly dissipated
My guess would be available XQD cards when the D4 is available. Or/and XQD to SD adapters available.

AF/MF selector is worse. Here you will be able to switch between AF and MF directly BUT: to change between AF-S and AF-C you need to press the button and spin a wheel. To change between area AF , one point AF etc you will spin the other wheel.
As I never change between AF-S and AF-C (move focus to the AF-ON button and use AF-C in all situations), putting this on the dial (or even in a menu) is just fine by me :)

He merely speculated. Didnt happen.

Well, he put it quite strongly, without hesistation or caveats. And normally he is quite well informed. But apparently it didn't happen, no...

Where is the the fast flash sync speed of 1/500 sec? There so only so subtle improvements in the photographic features from D3 to D4. A faster flash sync speed would have been a milestone (apart from that the EOS 1 back in the day had it already). OK the new video features are phenomenal for those who need it or those Nikon's marketing aims at, but would R&D for a faster flash sync speed have cost so much more since there is a new shutter technology anyway? I don't get it.

Or was he referring to the AF stuff we're seeing in the the 1 series? And perhaps some of those things are there in live-view too?

That's certainly possible, I didn't think about the 1 series AF.

Even though I have set my camera with AF-on same as you, I use AF-S sometimes, for shallow DOF work with the f1.4 G primes.

The bigger problem is the dynamic area / single point setting must also be set this way , and I often switch between those.

This guy has some different information, obviously (?)

http://www.photoanswers.co.uk/News/Search-Results/Product-News/Nikon-unveils-the-D4-full-frame-D-SLR-/

"With a completely new and smaller battery, Nikon has also improved battery performance. A single charge is expected to take 5500 frames"
He should take it up with Nikon. Search "CIPA", near the bottom of this page:

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25482/D4.html#tab-ProductDetail-ProductTabs-TechSpecs

The DPR D4 Overview has the same information. Check the Key Specs section on the first page of the overview.

Family, mostly sports. Seriously, folks, I'm not that good. If I can do it, you can do it!
photo galleries at http://eteam.zenfolio.com
my relationship with my camera is strictly photonic

He was indeed referring to the on sensor phase detect AF that has been released in the Nikon 1.

The sky is blue and there is nothing we can do..

Had a quick look at the specs & it looks like a cracking body.

A little too expensive for me at this time, but I enjoy seeing the progress Nikon & Co make.
The quieter shutter would be appealing for me.
