Apparently this is "normal" for the lens. A couple other users posted that it sounds like a bag of spanners (wrenches, to yanks like me) when shaken (not stirred).

Other OIS lenses may do this as well. It is most likely the OIS lens group, which when not powered by the camera is free to move and thus rattle. I don't have this lens yet to confirm, but my 45-200 rattles a bit if I shake it the right way.

Thanks all!

I've just shaken my 14-45 and that also has a (much less obvious) rattle, which I have never noticed before.

I am loving the 45-175. The whole point of m43 to me is size and weight. Until the 45-175 all telephotos were to big.... Its really nice IQ too, and the one worry I had before purchase was that the zoom-by-wire would be annoying, but its not. it works great!!!

My 45-175 rattles too, its normal.

I so agree with you about the size and weight of this lens, when i normally go out with a long tele zoom lens i would have it round my neck on a strap and take the camera and lens weight in my left hand to lesson the pull on my neck, my G3 and 45-175 hung round my neck is so light i don't even know its there at all, and to top it off, the image quality is very good too :-)
