Need help in deciding which type of memory card that is best suited for my Canon 60D. Primarily I will be shooting in RAW pictures mode and only occasionally I will be shooting in in HD video mode. I came across three main type of memory cards, SD, SDHC and SDXC. What is the differene between these cards?

Also, do I really need a Class 10 memony card to meet my photography requirements?

Cheers!

the only difference between the three types is how much data they can hold:

sd = 0 - 4gb max
sdhc = 4 - 32gb max
sdxc = 32gb - 2tb (~2000gb) max

an sd card will not hold as many raw/video files as an sdhc or sdxc card. from the canon website, the 60d can use all three types.

from the official sd association, a minimum class 4/6 is needed for HD video and a minimum class 10 is needed for consecutive HD photos.

i purchased a 32gb class 10 sdhc card and have no problems taking consecutive raw pictures (as many as allowed by the camera buffer) or hd video.

whatever works for you ...

Buy 2 cards instead of one as you might want to take photos while you're backing up.

I just bought 2 8Gb Sandisk 45Gb/s cards and believe it or not, it makes a difference with a notebook built-in card reader. Not so much the USB ones (They are limited to 30Gb/sec) and that was for about 20 euros each.

Not all class 6 or class 10 are the same.

The class is the MINIMUM speed for a card to pass the standard. There are cards which are faster than the minimum, may not be much more expensive and make a difference in speed that you enjoy.

DSLRs have a faster CPU, faster card reader/writer. They also have a bigger RAM buffer. Means that if the card is slightly slower, it may not give you trouble for stills because the RAM can buffer 3, 10 shots while waiting for the card write to finish. However, if the buffer is small and fills up, yes, your camera is unresponsive and busy.

Video is a different case - you want a fast enough card otherwise the video recording will be jerky

if you shoot only occasional video then an inexpensive class 6 SD memory card will be sufficient - Kingston or Transcend 8 GB, etc.

This question comes up a lot.

Memory cards are a commodity.
They come in different sizes and different speeds.

Assuming you buy a reputable brand, they all work fine. The brand you buy makes very little difference, and the brand of your camera makes no difference either. You should buy a card from a well known maker that does what you need it to do. It should be fast enough and big enough for your needs.

Since they all work, you need to ask yourself only two questions:
  • What size card do I need? (because you will need more storage if you shoot video or RAW files, both of which take up a lot of space), and
  • What speed card to I need? (again because card speed can make a big difference if you are shooting RAW files, especially in continuous burst mode.)
Assuming you are selecting among brands that are all well made and reliable, then price should be your major concern.

There is no "best card for the Canon 60D." But there is a best type card for your shooting needs, and it won't matter if you are using a Canon 60D or a Nikon D3100. It will still be the best card for those needs.

I use a 32 GB scandisc class 10. Bought it on Amazon for around 50 bucks a few months ago. Also have a couple of 8 GB back ups. I shoot RAW and have had no issues worthy of mention as yet.
