I'm looking at getting a 77mm circular polarizer filter for my 17-55 f2.8 efs lens. I'm not interested in getting the "bottom of the barrel" or any e-bay knockoffs, but was a little shocked at the prices out there.

Adorama has the Hoya Pro1 for $163.63+free ship
http://www.adorama.com/HY77CPLP1.html

that is about the most I want to spend, any suggestions and or comments on this or any other comparable filters. Also, how well will a lens cap work on this low profile circular polarizer filter?

Read the reviews from that link......not very good and they are still difficult to clean.

I'd recommend going for the B+W MRC version.....it is superior to the Hoya using premium German Schott glass and it has brass mounts to minimize binding......and it's even less.........

........or go for the Kaesemann version for a few dollars more.......

There is a place on ebay that sells Hoya and B+W cheaper , but takes a couple of weeks to get .
If not in a hurry , they have sales .
I have hoya and B+W - I only use the B+W KSM CPL .

You do not need slim , but you do need a rubber hood .[ a lot easier to adjust CPL ] The strongest is B+W , but it collapses only 3 times , I have a 5 and 7 . The B+W is good for the 17-55 , I use the 5 or 7 on the 10-22 mainLy .

By the way , a little dust does not hurt any filter , finger prints , smudges , drops - need to be cleaned .

I found this polarizing filter review:

http://www.lenstip.com/115.1-article-Polarizing_filters_test.html

it puts the B+W Slim KSM and the Marumi DHG Super tied at number 1. I've found the Marumi DHG Super on amazon for $83.54+free ship: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003QSG0HK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&m=A117K1DEQYNJIS

that is less than half of the B+W cost. I think I'm going to give the Marumi a shot, it will allow for me to get other equipment, and is way batter than most of the circular polarizers out there. It won't be the weak spot in my system, the guy holding the camera is the weak spot.

I have a B&W 67mm one, which works well (but has a slight colour cast, i suspect).

For my 12-24mm Tokina, I did not want to get such an expensive one, and went for a Hama pol cir filter. It looked a whole lot better (quality) than the cheap tiffen stuff, so I though I could take the chance.

I am not disappointed... it really works well, and I have not noticed any degradation of IQ under normal circumstances. I suspect it is not multi coated, but since a pol. filter usually does not get used into the sun, I was/am not too concerned about that.

In short, very nice pol filter for the price. Operates as smooth as my B&W one.

I am not sure Hama is available outside of Europe. I suspect they are rebranded Kenko, though... They look the same.

It was a gamble, but I am pleasantly surprised, as the filter gives very good results.
Here the price on amazon for the Kenko (shown image is not a 77mm one):

I tried Marumi once and they make a nice CPL and well worth every bit, but it's still hard to beat the finish, brass mount and German premium Schott glass of the B+W CPL.
I've had nice experiences through this reputable vendor...........

I went with B+W because
1. easier to clean

2 . You can get brass threads Brass and Aluminum expand contract at difference rates / temperatures - that helps with sticking
3 . They have a ksm - more weather proof
4 . you can get 3 stops of ND from them .

I love the Maruimi DHG. Great filter for the price. and yes I alos have B&W and Hoya Pro's.

The B&W Kaesemann "Nano" multicoated CPL is thin and has front threads. I bought a 72mm for my EF-S 15-85mm f 3.5-5.6, and I don't see any vignetting due to the filter. Quality of sky and saturation of colors is good. Mounting is very good. I have to say that the thin-mount CPLs are somewhat hard to grip and turn (teeny-tiny rings are hard to grab individually, though movement is very smooth), and not worth extra $ if you don't need to use the CPL on a super wide angle lens.

+1 for the Hoya HD, great filter and able to withstand a lot of punishment.

Search YouTube for Hoya HD and watch the filter being bashed on the counter.

I wondered why the ball kept getting bigger, then it hit me.

My thoughts exactly, i have this CPL + 77mm to 72mm step down ring and use it both on my 15-85mm and my 10-22 with outstanding results. I paid 178$ for the CPL on Amazon.

this @ 15mm (on 15-85) in San Diego at roughly 2PM:
