K-x Shadow Compensation - loss of contrast

The original JPEG looks the most natural, the Apical and shadow compensation photos look like a little too much fill light was applied.
 
I'd say that's a matter of opinion. The effects are adjustable for the Apical, Pentax and Nikon methods. Needless to say they can be tailored to the user's preference.

However, as for "natural"... if natural is something close to what the eye takes in then the first shot is nowhere close. When I saw the scene I could clearly make out detail in the sky and in the shadows beneath the tree canopy. The first shot avoids blowing the sky out at the expense of most of the detail below the canopy. Again... not at all like a human sees it.

I think we get so used to seeing the very limited DR of the average photograph, from even the best of cameras, that we begin to see that as a natural photo. But the fact is, when it's not overdone, a good HDR does look far more natural to most.
