Most cameras uses a little bit of power even when turned off. If I leave a battery (lithium rechargeable) in the camera for a few weeks, would it continue to drain the battery even when there's nothing left in the battery to drain, and cause permenant damage to the battery?

Theoretically, yes, damage can be done to a Li-ion battery if the voltage drops too low and the battery is still being used.

And leakage can occur at any time with a battery, so keeping it separate can mitigate any damage from leakage inside a camera.

The only downside is that the camera clock may have to be reset when you resume use.
