The FW Version 2.2 instructions state that there is absolutely no need to aplly the Version 2.2 update if the FW is already at Level 2.1 ...serpeant wrote:
Now the 'new' 2.2 firmware has been out for a month.
Have we worked out what it does yet?
If that is what Panasonic intended to happen, it would be nice if their FW Update instructions (or at least the camera LCD display itself) would have told you that, indeed!depscribe wrote:
i wonder if the fact that my camera was at 2.1 had anything to do with its refusal to flash to 2.2.
But you made it through the event unscathed ... and none the worse for having tried ... Sometimes further curiosity can/might "kill the cat" ...not, as you say, that it matters. still, if it was supposed to be able to flash and couldn't, there could be something broken, and that would be of concern.
I bet it was merely that your battery wasn't freshly\fully charged... The lions share of failed LX3 FWU's has been due to that...i wonder if the fact that my camera was at 2.1 had anything to do with its refusal to flash to 2.2.

Again - your LX3 made it through OK - and it performs normally, right? I would leave well-enough be. Curiosity can "kill the cat" ...depscribe wrote:
no, i charged the battery right to the top immediately before trying the upgrade -- because having the battery sputter halfway through will kill the gadget. it seemed to be upgrading, but then threw an error and that was that. i retried it, to the same effect.

seems to be fine, yeah -- just wouldn't take the upgrade.Again - your LX3 made it through OK - and it performs normally, right? I would leave well-enough be. Curiosity can "kill the cat" ...
i'm disinclined to experiment too much with it -- was just curious as to whether this had occurred elsewhere (apparently not), lest there be a problem should there be actually useful upgrades in the future. But if curiosity still lingers, one might (hypothetically) ask: what would happen if you tried to re-apply the FW Level 2.1 Update (if you have it archived) to your (currently at FW Level 2.1, as I understand it) DMC-LX3?
not too worried about that; the mechanism seems to be in place to not flash anything unless all is exactly right. and lx5 should be here soon and the lx3 will go to live on the back of the telescope.(When under warranty), Panasonic Tech Support has stated to me that they will not void the warranty based on customers applying FW Updates ... But who wants to wait for weeks while you have unsettling dreams of your "baby" being dissected by a total stranger ...![]()
(I think) the chances of another DMC-LX3 FW Update are (virtually) nil ... though you (might) need to (possibly) re-flash you FW in case of defective behavior ij the future ...i'm disinclined to experiment too much with it -- was just curious as to whether this had occurred elsewhere (apparently not), lest there be a problem should there be actually useful upgrades in the future.
Cosmic rays, no doubt ...it's a mystery and is perhaps forever destined so to remain.
