Now the 'new' 2.2 firmware has been out for a month.

Have we worked out what it does yet?

It turns your LX3 into an LX5. ;)

Actually, I have no idea....curious about this myself as my LX3 was shipped with 2.1 and I've never had reason to think about upgrading it.

doesn't seem so, which is just as well -- it refused to install on my lx3.

It installed fine on my LX3. Honestly, I couldn't find any differences....

Panasonic has been so uncharacteristically secretive that it does make one wonder.

Either the change was purely trivial or there was a huge problem they corrected and didn't want to share. (infrared issues ??)

Lots of room for speculation. But unfortunately, few facts....

The FW Version 2.2 instructions state that there is absolutely no need to aplly the Version 2.2 update if the FW is already at Level 2.1 ...

Thus, (it appears) that Panasonic's statement that the FW Version 2.2 Update "improves performance" is targeted (only) for users who presently have FW levels of 2.0 or lower installed ...

My DMC-LX3 arrived with FW Level 2.1 already "flashed" at the factory (having evidently been manufactured/tested in/after October 2009. I have (as a result of the above information) simply left my FW Level 2.1 just as it is. Things can go wrong anytime that an electronic device's FW is being re-flashed. Why tempt fate if one does not have to to do?

Firmware Versions 2.1 and 2.2 appear to (in all respects where camera operation is concerned) be identical . Why Panasonic released a separate (but identical to Version 2.1) FW Version 2.2 remains an enigma ... (but an irrelevant enigma, nevertheless).

i wonder if the fact that my camera was at 2.1 had anything to do with its refusal to flash to 2.2.

not, as you say, that it matters. still, if it was supposed to be able to flash and couldn't, there could be something broken, and that would be of concern.

If that is what Panasonic intended to happen, it would be nice if their FW Update instructions (or at least the camera LCD display itself) would have told you that, indeed!

But you made it through the event unscathed ... and none the worse for having tried ... Sometimes further curiosity can/might "kill the cat" ...

I re-flash FW (on all my electronic devices) as in-frequently as possible. Weird hang-ups (as you experienced) can occur - reminding us of the potential dangers involved in the business of "flashing" FW ... ;)

I had 2.1 on my LX3 and installed 2.2 with no problems. I wouldn't have done so though if I'd known that there was no advantage.

I bet it was merely that your battery wasn't freshly\fully charged... The lions share of failed LX3 FWU's has been due to that...

The only thing that confuses me is why Panasonic would release fw 2.2 that is exactly the same as fw 2.1.

There must be differences!!!

no, i charged the battery right to the top immediately before trying the upgrade -- because having the battery sputter halfway through will kill the gadget. it seemed to be upgrading, but then threw an error and that was that. i retried it, to the same effect.

Again - your LX3 made it through OK - and it performs normally, right? I would leave well-enough be. Curiosity can "kill the cat" ...

But if curiosity still lingers, one might (hypothetically) ask: what would happen if you tried to re-apply the FW Level 2.1 Update (if you have it archived) to your (currently at FW Level 2.1, as I understand it) DMC-LX3?

(When under warranty), Panasonic Tech Support has stated to me that they will not void the warranty based on customers applying FW Updates ... But who wants to wait for weeks while you have unsettling dreams of your "baby" being dissected by a total stranger ... ;)

seems to be fine, yeah -- just wouldn't take the upgrade.

i'm disinclined to experiment too much with it -- was just curious as to whether this had occurred elsewhere (apparently not), lest there be a problem should there be actually useful upgrades in the future.

not too worried about that; the mechanism seems to be in place to not flash anything unless all is exactly right. and lx5 should be here soon and the lx3 will go to live on the back of the telescope.

it's a mystery and is perhaps forever destined so to remain.

(I think) the chances of another DMC-LX3 FW Update are (virtually) nil ... though you (might) need to (possibly) re-flash you FW in case of defective behavior ij the future ...

... Do you have the FW Update 2.1 saved somewhere? Panasonic always removes prior FW Updates from their web-sites ... :(

Cosmic rays, no doubt ... ;)

I bought my LX3 recently, used but not much, off eBay in Australia. Just checked -- the firmware is 2.2.
