I am a pro photographer that is just now turning digital (I know I'm late, but better late than never). I use a camera with a compact flash card and am very happy with that but I need some suggestions for long term storage and delivery medium. What do you all recommend as the best way to store digital photos? Compact flash, microdrive, compact disc, floppy? I need something reasonably priced and easy to use. I also will be sending clients photos and need to know the best way to do this? Is a floppy too small for a series of photos? If I use CDs, do I need to get a CD burner? What other equipment do I need? Sorry for so many questions. I may have the photography down, but the technology is all new to me. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Right now. CDs. Get a CD burner - they're fairly cheap - burn at least two copies, store one or more sets in a seperate physical location (fire/theft/alien abductions/etc.)

Before long. DVDs.

For your clients? You'll have to ask them. Most folks with computers have a CD-ROM drive. I'm not a professional but I find it quite easy to burn a CD and hand it to someone. Just burned three CDs for the crew that drilled my new well. They wanted to see themselves - I shot the process.

Tara,
CD burner for sure. Some clients will like their photos on a CD for previewing. But you wouldn't want to send them High Resolutions files... that would be like giving them the negatives. They'd take the CD and print their own photos.

Hello (again) Tara

You've probably already heard that floppies are too small. CD-R and DVD-R are turning into the archival storage mediums of choice. However, don't blink because in 4-6 years holographic CD's will be available for archival storage. Rumor has it that the holographic CD will be addressable on both surfaces as well as between the surfaces. Estimated capacity was quoted at 100Gig.

Bottom line: Any storage medium based on magnetism is eventually subject to image decay. This would include floppies and back-up tapes.

I've found that the best way to distribute digital Albums is Flip_Abum. Check it out at http://www.flipalbum.com . The Professional version allows you to apply copyrights and file protection.

Good Luck!
Mike

PS: I usually hide out over on the Sony Forum.
