7D AF issue, sports

What you were describing and showing us is not acceptable for any DSLR, let alone a relatively high-end one like the 7D. And you shouldn't have to go through all those machinations to make it work; it should work right out of the box. The camera is specified to do all the things you expect it to, and to do them well; you don't need to make excuses for it.

Let us know how your new one works.

I agree and there is no "learning curve" with the 7D if you're familiar with other Canon xD and xxD cameras. You should get excellent results in rudimentary shooting situations if the camera is in the proper mode at defaults.

My hunch is you'll be very pleased with the new one.

Zone-AF sucks for indoor sports, all 19 is plain unusable (even outside) and 1selected AF point is just too narrow sometimes. For soccer I found zone-AF to work best (with unstable results).
Zone-AF does NOT suck. It's just a focus algorithm. It's often useful and must be used appropriately. I just did a write-up on the good and the limitation of Zone-AF at:

The second body works a whole lot better than the first one! I have an average of 80% sharp action shots now. A whole improvement, so I'm happy! I'm still careful in my opinion since I haven't been able to shoot indoor sports because of the holiday season... But the soccer I did is pretty good! Image quality is also much better and it seems that the AF responds differently than the first body. I've shot a whole game using the 16 points, starting from the centre point it it works. With the last body this AF mode was totally useless...
Let's see what the indoor sports will be like... But I'm pretty happy now.

Good to hear (and see) you're getting better results with the second body. I believe the 7D does have very good AF but for some reason there has been a high number with AF calibration problems. I've had exerience with two that could not focus in static AF with any consistency. I now have one that does seem to AF properly though I've not been able to get out and really shoot with it as our weather sucks and I'm more of a fair weather shooter.

Good luck and keep us posted.
