I just got my Voigtlander 35mm VF. It slides tight into the GF1 hot shoe, so it's not going to fall out. I really like the bright view through this optical finder. In bright sun, I find the wonderful LCD of the GF1 just plain unusable, but of course your mileage may vary. :)

Best of all, this VF does not block the popup flash, whereas the 40mm Voigtlander VF does.

Thanks to those of you here who helped me move to this VF, especially Renato. I'm going to send back the 40mm VF to B&H.

I like mine quite a lot. Its in my bag all the time--actually mostly on the GF1 LOL, but I still want the EVF for more critical MF focus which you can't do with external VF. But--most of the time, composition and using one of the focusing modes works very well with this.

Does the LCD have the ability to be turned off, either manually or automatically when your hold it to your face, when you look through an optical finder? If not, how much of an issue is this when using the finder?

The LCD does not turn off automatically if using the EVF, but there is a button on the side of the EFV to switch from EVF to LCD. Otherwise I imagine the LCD can be turn-off manually through the DISPLAY button on the back.

I'm aware of the button on the EVF, my question is in regards to using the GF1 with an optical finder such as the CV one the OP is using. Some cameras are designed to automatically sense when you raise it to eye-leve and turn off the LCD, however I wasn't sure the GF1 can do that, especially because it assumes use of the EVF with the selection button, but obviously no button is present if using an optical viewfinder.

The G1 and the GH1 have that option, but I'm guessing that it wasn't added to the menu because (I'm betting) most people won't add the EVF. Perhaps most importantly, the sensor for that is in the EVF in the G1--at the right side, so adding it would add some size to the accessory EVF--something I'm sure they didn't want to do. Using the OVF its an easy matter to do a double click on the display button--though I generally just leave it alone.
