I own an EP-1 but i'm not satified about AF i think it is too slow.

I was curious to give a try to GH! due to its AF wich it very fast according to most users. so last day i went to my favourite shop and i tried GH1. I took some pictures and i went back home.

The AF is really far better that that of EP-1 i liked it very much, there was very good light contidions but it worked flawless. I liked the cam and the ergonomic of it but i was not impressed about pictures.

I don't know why but pictures from GH1 look a little dull not so brilliant colors are not so deep, really don't know why but that's what i see.

I have tried only standard and vibrant type of presets.... I think standard is little dull lacks of brilliance and seems poor light. Vibrant is the same but with more saturated colors.... In any ways colors are not deep not well saturated..... Anyway is my opinion.

I surfed the net looking for more GH1 samples, most of then confirmed my initial impression........ Maybe is a Panasonic look wich i simply don't like............

I find EP-1 colors more well saturated and images look more brilliant......

Now i'm in a bad situation..... Not happy about EP-1 AF not happy about GH1 Colors.... I wanted a ligher cam then my D700 to take everyday with me but i wanted a dslr like IQ, better then my G10......
Now i've only a chance, hope Olympus fix AF issue.....

Bye.

I only shoot RAW so am not sure about the presets. Sounds like a curves issue to me. If you are willing to do a bit of processing, try a nice S curve and see. Better RAW if you are willing. I actually like the colors I get from the G1 very much (processed in LR--using all the tools there--sometimes my own presets, sometimes just a bit of curves or contrast or clarity.

No sorry, i didn't try raws because it was a test on a cam witch was at the shop....

I believe u about the raw possibilities but i'd rather prefear to use jpegs because it is the main purpose i want from a small camera....

I shoot raw only with D700, wheni use smaller cameras is for their better portability.

By the way now i'm very usure.... I really don't now if it worth keeping my EP-1 or swtch to GH1 or maybe GF1...... I really like 4:3 idea.....

I think i'll waith for Olympus to fix the AF, if they does i'll kepp it otherway i'll switch...

Thank you.

I was in the same boat as you. I had a G1 and liked it for the AF speed, handling, all the features you want. That is until I got the E-P1. The E-P1 was stylish, but compared to G1 the AF was very slow. But I really liked the jpg colors out of the camera. I was discouraged because G1 jpg colors were pale, less saturated. I kept changing film modes, saturation, sharpness, in camera, to no avail. I tried white balancing with a white card and grey card. I could not get the vivid saturated colors like I could with the E-P1. I was starting to wonder if the GF1 was going to have the same problem. I was wondering how people came out with such good pictures of the G1 in the forums.

Then yesterday, I pulled out my old Expodisc and started really playing with white balance. Once I hit the correct white balance (in natural film mode), the colors started becoming very vivid, and faithful to the real colors. I was very happy. Now I really feel that the G1 is a perfect package, even a year after it first came out. Getting white balance right has made a big difference for me:)

Funny I'm the opposite. Once I got used to using raw I just kept doing it on every camera I've had that could shoot raw. The work flow comes natural to me now. Honestly I'm a quick shooter and sometimes I make mistakes. Raw saves the day. I use Lightroom and really like the ease of making changes and producing output. Sounds like another responder has a good solution for you to try with white balance on jpegs. Good luck.

FF JPGs are cannot be degraded with TNT, they are so robust. Previously, I switched to the FZ8 (pinhead sensor) only for its raw feature, and shot JPG with my Drebel. RAW made a difference with the pinhead, the workflow wasn't worth it for the DSLR. Today the workflow is so easy (even batch processing takes only seconds) I always shoot RAW + JPG. But each to their own.

to me. I never liked how Panasonic does the colors (the LX3 suffers from this badly imho though some improvements have been made in the latest firmwares).

The GF1 seems like they got an improvement on them. Their micro four thirds improved over the LX3 imho.

But Olympus still has the best JPEG engine there, color wise looks much better. If you shoot in raw you can do your own stuff, but I don't think it is all that trivial to recreate Olympus' engine and of course, you have to spend time tweaking.

Panasonic does have a great B&W JPEG engine- I wish they did filter simulations too.

I really have to disagree - I've been pretty thrilled with the colors I get from the GH1! These are shot with kit lens (14-140), no filters, RAW but very little processing:

It really just comes down to using light to your advantage and exposing correctly, I find. Same as with any camera.

I completely agree with this 150%. I've found the auto WB on the GH1 to be a little too sensitive to subtle light changes. Setting the WB preset according to the light I'm shooting in (daylight, tungsten, etc) will do wonders for getting you the best possible color. Chalk up another reason to shoot RAW...

I totally agree with you. I had the same feeling after using LX3. Since that time, I have decided to let every Pana's camera go, due to the fact that their color is not my taste.
AF speed, can be fixed or endured.
Image color, I don't want to pp every photo I took.

AF speed cannot always be fixed (more often it is not fixed - not entirely or to everyone's satisfaction). And absolutely AF speed cannot be endured. If you miss the shot, you missed the shot. The only thing you have to endure is the fact you might have missed a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Of course you may not want to PP every photo you take, who does. But if you have a great capture that you want to share or print - you are going to PP it. Ansel Adams 'processed' (burning and dodging, etc.) every image he ever showed - it is part of photography. And it is the reason higher end cameras such as these have RAW. Sure a great OOC JPEG is nice, but when you want to showcase your best you never open an OOC JPEG and say, 'there it is, my best work"
