Hi all,

I just received my new Nikon 85mm f1.8 lens today when I tuned the focusing ring I noticed the focusing ring made noise from the gears and it feels there is a detent at the mid point of the focusing distance. Since my other Nikkor lenses do not have this anomaly so I want to check with the folks who also have the same lens if this is normal for this lens. Thanks.

My 85F1.8 AF (non-D) is smooth. No detent at all. Not completely silent, but I had to put my ear up to it just now to hear anything there.

My new lens is AFD and I can hear the noise from about 12-15 inches so it seems abnormal to me since my AFD 60mm f2.8 does not have this issue. My other lenses are AFS and my 80-200mm zoom do have this issue too.

Noise is a relative thing but there should be no "detent". Is your lens literally brand new or just new to you? If brand new, I would return it for exchange. If you bought it used, make sure it doesn't hang up when you focus through the range. Sounds like there may be a piece of grit between the teeth of one of the gears in the focus mechanism.

Regards, Paul
