D300 package? Too good to be true?

not too good to be true.

all the stuff that comes with it is junk.

this is not an exaggeration.

it's just like if you saw a porshe for sale at normal price offered with the LEAST EXPENSIVE TIRES known to man. (i must reinforce how an integral part of an automobile the tires are!) and yes expensive tires are usually sinonomous with great. they can usually handle much higher speeds much safer in more weather conditions for much longer.

also

windo tinting that would start to peel and flake in the first summer.

and a 10 dollar chrome tip on the exhaust.

so....if you want this cheap junk with the camera great deal. i would say.....if 1700 is what you have to spend. please do yourself and every photo you take a favor get a d90 a could card. you need more than 1 gig a good card reader like a sandisk. the lens is an ok choice but just get the 18-105 vr that comes in the d90 kit. and get an sb-600.

Why would you buy an expensive camera and get a cheap lens and a bunch of cheap no-name cruddy accessories? That's like getting a Porsche and buying no-name tires and putting in 87 unleaded. If you can afford the D300 you can afford to treat it right. :)

I suspected as much but wanted my suspicions reaffirmed.

I don't want junk. I don't mind paying for a good camera.

Are they not listed on this site as a uggested retailer?

I'll probably go with Ritz, or Camera Bar in Hartford, CT.

Thanks again, I appreciate your honest opinions and advice and trust your judgment.

They had D300 and 18-200 for $1910, but it appears it's back up to 2150. You can get a good deal on a legit D300 on eBay using the live.com cashback feature (best I saw was about 1500- 200 cash back). Search "live.com" in the forum search and you'll find some threads discussing the plan. You definately don't want to put trash lenses on the D300.

I know it's a UK example but that's about what I paid for my D300 with a Sigma 10-20mm and 4GB CF card 5 days ago (about £1150 incl UK sales tax (VAT)) and based on a 1.4x exchange rate).

Don't think its a great deal as US costs are usually lower than UK? The 18-55 is not a premium lens is it?

Best regards

Victor

You can also get a number of great deals on Ebay from Cameta Camera. They are an authorized Nikon USA dealer. You can choose between new D300s and Nikon USA demos. You should be able to get a new body only D300 for

RUN MimiS. Run as fast as you can away from this "deal."

LOL... it really is a bad deal.

Thanks for your advice. I've run as fast as I can towards Cameta Camera or B&H.

I always come here first before buying any camera equipment because I know I can get good, sound advice.

I just picked up a Demo D300 on Ebay from Cameta Camera for $1187. Then Ebay had a $100 coupon code , so it was $1087 . Just received it yesterday in excellent condition. I have to learn alot about it .But hey , that's one of the exciting things about it... learning as you go

less than that.

I'm carefully researching all suggestions. I will take a look at what you have posted.

I just came from a camera club meeting and a few members recommended: http://www.huntsphotoandvideo.com . Hunts has the D300 with a 18-200 mm VR zoom for $2,000.

Don't know about the other places but I have been doing bid-ness with B&H for years and spent lots more money with them that I want to admit to. They have never let me down and I recommend them to my friends without any reservation.

For certain, there is a learning curve but you will fall in love the D300.

You will find the 18-200 to be a great all purpose travel lens but for shooting around home, at some point you will lust for the 17-55 f2.8 lens, among others of course.

Just wait and see.

Good luck on what ever you decide.

I have to go check that lens out now. Christmas is coming.

B&H is another place camera club shops. Actually, I have purchased lenses from them and been happy with the service.

Eventually I will figure it out. I'm almost there with a little help from my friends. :-)
