Dumb question of the day folks.

By me :)

I am new to Lightroom and I have a several folders that contain a variety of files. Jpg, Tiff, RAW (CR2) and PSD.

How do I filter by a certain file type in side a single folder. So that it ONLY shows the file type I selected?

When I am in the Library Module and goto Folders and click on a single folder on the filter bar I only have the option of filtering by Rating, Flag (pick) and color. There is the sort option to chose "sort" by file type but that still shows all the files in the folder "grouped" by file type. It dosen't exclude my grid view from showing the other file types I don't want to see.

If I choose a folder and then goto Metadata Browser and choose the .jpg file type extension that is for the entire catalog not just for this particular folder.

Anyone?

See if this is what you are looking for:

Click on your folder. Then in the left side panel, go to Find. Choose Filename, Ends with, and type in .jpg (or other ending)

Thanks, this was very helpful.

On a similar note, I have never been able to successfully sort by file type or by file extension in Lightroom. Ie if I have a folder that contains DNGs/RAW files and also TIFFs I would love to be able to sort by file type but it is always a bit of a jumbled mess that does not sort the images into TIFFs then DNGs or vice versa. Seems to me this should be a pretty simple operation - anyone out there got any solutions/ideas? Cheers, Patrick

You can change one of your filter columns to file type. Or you can add a new column and have it filter by file type. Just click on the column header and pick from the list.

Yes you are correct, LR does seem to do some odd things when sorting be "file type" but sorting by extension seems to be the best option.

If I select sort by "extension" then LR sorts the files alphabetically by extension (cr2, dng, orf, psd, tif), then, within each extension group the photos are sorted by capture time.

The reason why LR seems to jumble up sorting by file type is a mystery to me.

in addition to Jims suggestion a work around could be Creating a "collection set" with a "SMART" collection for each extension type.

eg "File Name", "Ends With", "DNG" will add each new DNG file to the collection automatically.

If you look at the whole "collection set" the photos will be sorted as per the tool bar setting but at least you will be able to select all of your photos with a particular extension with a simple one click of the mouse on the relevant smart collection.

Hope this helps

Hah huh

I see.

After looking at Jims suggestion LR uses "file type" as

  1. Digital Negative/Lossless (DNG)
  2. Jpeg (JPG)
  3. Photoshop Document (PSD)
  4. RAW (CR2, NEF, ORF, etc. etc.)
  5. TIFF (Tif)
This would account for the impression that the files are jumbled which is not really the case.

- Library module (grid view)

- select the folder

- activate filters

- filter by text (any)

- write the extension you'll like (jpg,tif,orf,cr2.mov....)

done

As long as this thread seems to be wandering about different filtering/sorting issues, I have a question: Is there any way to sort images by their Operating System date (creation date or modify date would do)?

I can see how to sort by date added to LR or by Capture Time (EXIF date, I assume), but I see no option for file date.

You don't see image files in Lightroom. You see database records, each with its thumbnail.

Those are the entities that you are manipulating, sorting etc. The OS has nothing to do with it at that point; the physical storage concerned, may even be disconnected.

You can only sort on the contents of certain preset fields, of those database records. For example the capture date sort is deriving entirely from the Catalog and not at all from the file system. Capture date has been identified as useful to picture (not file) management tasks, so a place is made for that in the database and the Import process populates that.

But IMO it is unlikely that LR will ever go to the trouble of first copying these other kinds of far more file-specific (and picture-irrelevant) info into its database at import, and then of continually ensuring it is still up to date, thereafter; that would be frankly foreign to its whole paradigm anyway.

Bridge is all about reflecting the file system as currently seen; viewing each file at its home address.

One could say, LR is the product for those who do NOT want to view the domestic practicalities of the files; but instead, to view an image library - where the attributes of interest, have to do with an image's "work life" - its functional career within that library, in terms of the library.

Its birthday, its shoe size: not significant, professionally.

Thanks for the excellent explanation. I guess I'm just schizophrenic enough to want to spend some time in both the LR database world and the file system world. Sadly, due to the philosophical considerations you mention, LR has decided that I cannot.

I guess I have to learn to live in LR's world or switch to a different DAM that chooses to stand astride both worlds.

Thanks again,

-barry

Take a look at Photo Mechanic. I use LR but have considered PM for image management. It seems to have an option to sort by modification date. Also I believe you can sort by file size which I find useful and LR does not have this option. I haven't used PM so this would have to be verified. Also I don't know if you can span folders as you can in LR which is a useful option when sorting. PM lacks anything equivalent to Develop features in LR.

while we're at it, how do you filter by camera type?
Either by creating a smart collection

eg Camera Contains 7D

Or by filter columns

Turn on filters

Select default columns.

Remove all columns except "Camera"

Save as a preset if you wish.

Choose the camera to filter by.
