Hi all,

I know this question is off topic, but my wife wants to get a good video Digital camera, and we don't know where to find a forum for comparing picture quality etc. We have been looking at the Canon GL1 or XL IS 3ccd.
Does any one know of any links?
Thanks
Mike

As a writer for 2-Pop I'll give you the short answer. We have GL-1's, XL-1's and Sony VX-2000's. Go with the Sony DCR-VX2000, the picture blows away the Canon's.

Mike,

The site for mini DV is http://www.2-pop.com/ . There is enough
material on both of those units in their archives to keep you busy
for a year.

...with the camera, and picture quality.

I've used 'cheaper' consumer Sony DV cams previously (P7), and this was a great improvement in image quality.

Part of that is the L glass on the front, which is real quality.

Couldn't justify the XL on cost, although having that ability to use my existing L lenses was tempting.

Plus it would have been a highly visible bit of kit, owing to it's unique shape!

Only negative I have is the focal length of the GL lens, it could do with being wider for use inside buildings.

I'd suggest you'd need to buy the Canon wide adapter with it when you make your purchase.

3rd party wide lenses all distort too much, so I'd stick with Canon, and they're not expensive.

I used it to record a shuttle launch in 2000, and it did a great job, even in the dark!

I use the Firewire DV output into a Mac G4 for editing, and that's worked beautifully too.

Edit up using iMovie or Final Cut, and drop back to the DV Cam or out to CDV using Toast.

I'll second Mark's recommendation here; I tried a GL1 briefly, while it was a very nice and capable camera, I liked the VX2000 better, and that is what I have now.

don't mean to butt in here but I am also looking for a mini dv cam for golf swing analysis system....I need a good range of shutter speed and will be shooting indoors from about 10-15 feet away so need fov wide enough to capture golfer plus club during entire swing. Software runs 60 frames per sec....cost is an issue and I also need decent but inexpensive lights.

The software company uses Canon ZR-40....

Thanks for any info

http://www.OneCall.com has the ZR50MC for $719. Ask for Stephanie and tell her Jason told you to call. I have one and it does a great job. Its also 22x optical and takes Low Res snap shots as well. I think you will really like the quality that comes out of this Mini DV.

Get the wide angle. I use my zr50 mounted to my rollbar on the track. The sony's I used had a much wider setup stock, the zr50 is very narrow and couldnt even get my full front window.

Also it is subject to some really bad artifacting (jaggies) on 30-60degree angled straight objects. (IE 30 degrees+ away from horizontal or vertical)

Overall it looked good in the end, but just be aware its definitely a "consumer" camera and not even close to the level of what a G2 would be in the still line.

Formfactor is great and battery life is very good. I could do 2 full 60 minute tapes without getting to battery low.

Thanks Scot

car cam huh??? pretty cool! I don't need broadcast quality for this, just decent picture quality in normal and slow motion.
