New Nikkor AF-S 16-85 f3.5-5.6 VR !!

I just now saw this from Thailand Nikon users community forum. Thread's owner claims that He just got a new Nikkor AF-S 16-85 f3.5-5.6 ED VR and posted some pictures from this lens.

At first, I thought that this must be faked so I asked the guy to send me an original file taken by this lens. After I got the file, I opened it in NX and, WOW this is true!!!

I know that Exif can be edited but from what I see, I believe that this is truth.

Any comments are welcome.

Here the original file I got from him.

Here the picture of the lens he claims.

I would have called fake....until the photo of the lens. It looks....real. Same updated styling as seen on the most recent lenses, in particular.

Yeah, I'm sure that Nikon developed and released this lens under the radar, and gave it to just one guy in Thailand.

AND, it seems to have the exact same physical profile as an 18-70. Wonder of wonders...

The screen shot would be trivial to fake, and the numbers on the lens would be only slightly less hard for someone who knew Photoshop.

Hasn't the Internet been around long enough for us to not give credence to unlikely rumors and shoddy "evidence" produced by some guy in a forum somewhere?

If you were going to bother to fake a new lens I doubt it would be a new consumer level lens. There are many upgrades to Pro lens that would cause much more of a stir.

The original file is here.

Zachawry,

That is exectly what I thought when I saw this at first, but not after I got to see the original file. He even invited me to try on his new lens and maybe I will this evening because he's living nearby my place.

And for those who are expert in Exif, here the original file out of the camera he sent to me.

If this is real, I'll have to sell my 18-135 DX and get this one immediately.

It's floating around elsewhere, too, BTW (not that I understand any of this):

Wonder of wonders...

I don't know what you're looking at, but it's got different length, and different barrel shape (more like a small 18-200 VR).

On closer look you're right; they are slightly different. Same diameter but the "16-85" is slightly longer.

What is it about -------->

Assuming this exists ---- What is it about OEM lens makers which stops them from making F3.5-4.5 lenses anymore ? - they all seem to have a stiffie for horrible F5.6 apertures - only the 18-70 broke the mould with F4.5 at the long end.. I know F5.6 = cheaper but not that much and F5.6 (which it'll be through most of the range like the 18-55) has just totally turned me off that lens and I'll keep battling on with the 18-70 and 18-135 for light duties .. they've being doing this for years, the 24-120s are both Crappy F5.6 as was the Canon 28-135 --- both makers made compact 35-135s which pulled off F4.5 at 135mm !! .

They should have made the 18-135 F4.5 at 135 and put VR and Ring AFS in .. the 16-85 is a great range but F5.6 is a deal killer for me, it's even slower than the damn R1 lens which it mimicks ..

Lets face it - if this is a fake then it's an ingenious one as no one but Nikon or Canon (or Pentax or Oly or Sony or Tamron etc) would be lame enough to dream it up with F5.6 at 85mm - a faker would wishful think F4.5 !!

Agree

I agree.
Nice range and nice to have VR for the tele part.

But then, you loose 2/3 of stop when compared with the 18-70 and you probably get 1 stop from the VR. No big advantage is it?

It's a shame Nikon couldn't do it a f4.5. Would be a certain buy for me.

Would you please post some 100 % crops taken with the lens if you visit him?

I hope this lens is better than the old 18-70. My sample wasn´t very good. The 18-55 Kit lens easily outperfomed it.

But you gain 2mm in the wide end and another 15mm at the tele end. I think this would be a great kit lens to be bundled with whatever D80 replacement at US$300. Or a dual lens kit together with 70-300mm VR.

Nikon need this lens to fight Olympus, Pentax & Sony since they all have built-in anti-shake, the 18-200VR is too expensive as a kit lens while the 18-55VR is too "junior".
