i own a 580 but it is huge. looking for a COMPACT one for bounced flash for my g9. i want it smaller and lighter than the 430.

thought of culmann 20 AF but forum member said it cannot support ETTL for g9.

any recommendation?

... plus Canon Off-Camera Shoe Cord 2 and you get E-TTL with bouncing, plus being able to change the direction of light, direct or indirect.

Small, powerful and bounce capable. Gosh it was nice. Maybe Canon will do something simular.

I use my 580EXII on my G9. It is too big but boy it has the power to bounce off the ceiling and light the entire room!

Has anyone else considered this flash ?

Ive wondered about those cheaper flashes myself for my S5 IS since I dont want to spend a fortune on a flash. BestBuy has a Sunpak I would have bought for $99 that is much smaller than the 430EX and has bounce but Sunpak said it will work with the G5 but not my S5 IS and they dont know why yet. Im not sure about the G7/9 though.

I'd be careful with the Metz. I emailed Metz looking for a smaller option with bounce for my S5IS. Metz said that the 58 AF-1 C and 48 AF-1 C would both be fully compatible, but the 36 you linked to would have exposure issues. Not sure if the G9 has different requirements than the S5, but I'm posting the entire response email from Metz below.

"Dear Mr. Camden,

thank you very much for your e-mail and your interest in our products. Unfortunately, the camera Canon S5is is still not checked by our R&D department in detail to release an official statement or flashlight recommendation. But, after a quick check we can state that a mecablitz 58 AF-1 C and 48 AF-1 C will running properly on a S5is. This camera will be shown on http://www.metz.de as soon as we can provide a solution.

IN my opinion, a mecablitz 36 AF-4C is a low budget unit providing some drawbacks as irregularly exposure etc. Therferore, this flash unit seems to be not the best choice when using a digital camera.

In regard to having one of these flash units we recommend to get in contact with our agent in your country BOGEN Imaging. The complete address of them you can read below http://www.metz.de/en/service_support/photo_electronics.134.html .

Best Regards"

I'm in the same boat as you, Tapout. I'm very curious to read the experiences from the OP once (s)he/s had a chance to play with the flash.

Here is part of what they said to me when I asked about flashes for my S5 IS:

Unfortunately, other cameras like Canon S5is, G9, 40D and 1D MkIII was still not checked in our R&D department. But, after a quick check we know that these camera models can be already used with a mecablitz 48 AF-1 C and 58 AF-1 C V2.0. Only our adapter SCA3102 needs to be up-dated on a higher revision M4 which will be available at the beginning of next year. This new adapter SCA3102 M4 is necessary for the connection to our SCA flash units like 54 MZ-4i, 45 CL-4 dig and 76 MZ-5 digital.

The mentioned above cameras will be mentioned on http://www.metz.de as soon as we are able to provide a solution (M4).

Best Regards

the SB600/SB800 is more powerful and the lighting is softer to my taste than canon 580. even nikon 's very first entry level DSLR D70 has built-in flash which can work in commander mode that as far as i know is still not available in any canon DSLR.

i kinda feel canon own me something. :>

http://www.sunpak.jp/japanese/products/pz42x/index.html

and a PZ30

http://www.sunpak.jp/japanese/products/pf30x/index.html

dunno if they work for G9.

I haven't purchased one yet ... but, the Sunpak PZ-40X II E-TTL-II Auto Flash for Canon EOS is the best I've found yet.

Well BestBuy doesnt list thiers by the model number the same, so I can only assume it is the PF30X. They look identical. I also just emailed the person whom Ive been speaking with at Sunpak and asked for sure if the P40x works with the G9 and/or the S5 IS. I will have to stop by BestBuy and see the flash again and see what it says on it. Here is the link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ;jsessionid=NTIRXAYYCWIUTKC4D3HFAHQ?skuId=8181148&productCategoryId=abcat0410017&type=product&tab=2&id=1164153525808#productdetail

When I spoke with Sunpak I told them, that was the one I was looking at and it seemed to be the PF30x and they didnt say otherwise, just that the PF30x would not work with the S5 IS and they dont know why yet. They did say it would work with the G5 because I asked for somone else as well.

Sunpak just said:

There is something different with the S5is electronics that don't work wth PZ40xII. It works with the G7 and G9 though.

i didn't find the mark2 version of PZ40x in B&H nor SUNPAK offical website...

http://www.sunpak.jp/english/index.html

however, i found a PZ42x which is slightly larger but can swevil... the compatbility martix said it supports 40D and 1DMK3 but G series is not listed. interesting if i can support the latest DSLR but not latest G given the unit cliamed to support ETTL2.

btw, where can you find the mark2 version of PZ40X?
