'Traditional' camera clubs and digital shooters

Hello Diane

I found this thread way after it was dead. I was searching for online clubs in North Carolina. I have followed your threads and photo posts, and would love to find a few more people that are wanting to get together...any suggestions...

Michael Harvey
Oh, you mean we buy our cameras to make images? ARRGGGGGGH! Why
didn't anyone tell me this before I bought the E10 (and now the
Lipo)???!
What is discussed here more--gear or images?? smile

Interesting post to see again. I'm going on a landscape photography workshop in Southern Utah early in Oct. To the best of my knowledge I'm the only one shooting digital, in fact the instructor will have his large format camera along. The instructor is very curious about how the e-10 will do. I will have a laptop along to view the day's shoot in the evening, while the others will have to wait for processing.

Pretty simple really. Just go and check it out. If there are a lot
of people there with a snooty attitude in one way or another, or
just a bad attitude period, don't go back.
Marshal--this is an old thread on my part though Michael is looking for some info. I do belong to this club but rarely go. A number of them shoot digital 'on the side' (none use dig SLR cams) and there are some wonderful photographers in the group. However, I've found that I prefer to shoot alone--and am not interested in the competitions, so--as I said, I rarely go now.

Will you be using a panorama head and stitching or just trying to get the most out of the camera?

Hi Diane

It looks like, after reading some of these posts, that you are the ones to change the camera clubs to digital. They need a wake-up call. Photosig should convince anyone that the camera is not that important. So go for it and be a pioneer!

I seem to do pretty well without a pano head. I do my stitching with PanoTools and PTAssembler and am very pleased.

Hello Lory Hawley

I will be anxiuosly awaiting your posts of your Utah trip. I feel the E-10 will hold up just fine against most of the cameras.

I joined a local camera club almost a year ago, and have had nothing but a positive experience. I also am the only all digital photographer in this club of 140 members. What I have enjoyed is the fact that nobody can believe my images were taken with a digital camera (E20). I am in 3rd place in my level of competition, and even though a few of the original members of the club give me a hard time, they can't argue with the image quality. From reading the posts it sounds like I may have stumbled onto a bit of luck in finding an organization that is embracing new technology. Even the majority of the "master" photographers in the club say that it's not the gear but the eye behind it when asked if digital is an option.

Hello Diane.

I wanted to thank you for the posts. Many of these are just down the road from me. The one in Chapel Hill in fact is close, and they have a digital group. Thank you for your input. Talk to you soon.

Michael Harvey. Off to a 7 day Eastern Caribbean cruise.

Hi Gerald,

I will be experimenting with panorama, but I don't have a pano head. I've never stiched images together, so it will be very new to me. Mostly I will try to get the most out of the camera; after debating about getting a ND grad filter, I've decided to just go with my cheap polarizer and trust my workshop leader to guide me on its best use. This is my first real try at landscape, so am excited to see what our camera can do.
Warm Regards,

Lory

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I used to post here a lot, but it got harder to do. I'll try to post a few when I get back.

As Tony commented, a number of people seem to get pretty good results handheld and overlapping by eye. I've been vowing to try for a while now, but haven't really found a scene worth the trouble yet. :-) I'd like to try one of our state capital and surrounding buildings, but the way the highway(elevated) and city are laid out doesn't lend itself to it very well. Maybe when I can find time to find a nice vantage point -shooting from the highway would get me a ticket at least and probably run over... :-)

I hope you really enjoy your class and let us see some shots when you get back.
