Nice camera - very good sensor - VERY slow lens (F5.6 at the long end) - it could do with running off Four batteries too ....... It's a shame they didn't "9600" the 900 and make an E910 with 4 Batts, an F2.8-4 lens and other updates as the E900 got most of it right.

The E900 is an amazingly capable compact high resolution camera. At today's prices, it is just plain ridiculous. While it doesn't have the low ISO performance of the newer F30 type cameras, it can still shoot great ISO 800 jpegs that remain printable at 11X17 or so.

The lens is pretty sharp.

And more importantly the E900 can shoot RAW files which allows you to do all the image processing yourself. If you use S7Raw, a free RAW conversion program, it is even possible to create 18megapixel images from the RAW files. I've done some test shots at ISO 80 RAW, and have created some 18 meg tiff files that are really unbelievable in the amount of detail they capture.

The E900 is also a reasonable fast camera in startup and use, with very low shutter lag. The rubber grip and light weight make it very pleasant to handle, and it is easy to maintain a solid handhold.

AF can be a bit slow in dim light, but generally not a problem.

Both http://www.imaging-resource.com , and popular photography gave the E900 great reviews, and it received the "Editor's Pick" for best camera that will fit in a jacket pocket for 2006.

Unfortunately dpreview never reviewed it. The link to imaging resource's review is

Imaging resource is along with dpreview, my most trusted technical review site.

Good luck, at the prices the E900 is at these days, I can't imagine anyone not having one. You can spend a whole lot more money and not get half the camera the E900 is. Just my opinion, of course.

the E900 is so good, I've never bothered to get a wide angle lens for my Canon 400d, I am using it with portrait primes only (50 1.8 and 135 f/2 L).

E900 has 14bit raw files, Canon 400d 12bit...
I shoot raw files only...huge files but it's worth it, jpgs seem soft :(
and live histogram is fun. Being limited to 112 frames (on a 2gb card) makes

me a better photographer since I think twice before shooting, checking the histogram and framing carefully :) But it's not that bad, 112 frames is 3 rolls of film :)

Can anyone give me their opinion on the E900? Thanks
Rosie - without meaning to be rude - the people replying to your question are a bit like Sherlock Holmes, they work better with a few clues!

Owners' opinions reflect what they paid, how they use the camera and their other kit - so an idea of what you shoot, what else you're considering and what you're moving on from will all improve the responses you get. (How pompus was that - ugh! Sorry)

Don't know if you saw these reviews:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2005_reviews/e900.html
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/fuji/finepix_e900-review/

Since they were published it's worth noting:

Support for RAW files from the E900 was introduced in Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) update 3.3 - which works with Elements 3, PS CS2 and subsequent versions of both programs.

XD card prices recently dropped and the card space needed for extended RAW shooting is now much cheaper.

Users have reported the E900 doesn't suffer from its predecessor's annoying habit of prematurely declaring a battery to be low on charge and closing down.

I have the earlier E550 and love it. It's great as a versatile, carry-everywhere-everyday camera - except for that battery issue! Probably NOT ideal for baby-chasing parents due to the slight slowness in focusing (although I hardly ever find it much worse than other similar cameras).

With a decent end-of-line discount, it deserves serious consideration!

Hope that helps!

I also happyly use the 550 for some time now (closing in on my 6000th pic).

Another notable advantage of the E-series is the 32.5mm wide lens, just a bit wider than the usal 35/38mm

I personally find the battery performance of the 550 pretty good. You have to keep in mind that there is self-discharge with NiMh batteries, so only newly charged cells deliver full performance.

From what I read the low-light performance of the 550 is better than the 900, but i couldnt compare directly.

The 550 shoots iso 800 in 3megapixel mode only, but for low-lght RAW is the bettter option anyway. I got some remarkable results with RAW at iso400 + underexposure.

The only thing I miss is real wide-angle out of the camera.

Oh and I forgot, I sometimes have problems with flash exposer because the e550 seems to use a seperate photodiode for flash exposure metering, and if there are very dark objects on the image it does overexpose. Therefor there is no pre-flash.
But I think fuji returned to pre-flash with the e900.
