Is this lens pretty good for daylight shooting of baseball and soccer? I have it but have not used it for that. I'm thinking of giving it to my cousin who has youngsters playing sports. I have the 70-200L IS f4 which is long enough for my needs.

I sent them my 20D when I got the 40D with the little 24-85 lens a couple of weeks ago. They seem to be enjoying it. They have a ten year old and a 14 year old. The lens is just spending all of the time in my bag. I bought it for the zoo, but I guess the 70-200L is enough for that.

Juli,

That is so nice of you to give them the gear and it sounds like the 70-300 IS will compliment it very nicely especially for someone with kids. If you need the reach back on the 70-200 f4 L IS, then a 1.4X TC works just fine. I like the Kenko Pro ones. Reminds me that I haven't tried the TC on the 40D yet so maybe this should be next.

I just received this lens and am very surprised with it's quality, I think this another canon unsung jewel. I shot my grandkids on a bicycle jump in AI Servo, continuous shooting using my mk3. Not expecting anything, just playing around I was shocked with the IQ, very pleasing. Of course you need good sunlight to even consider it, but in the right conditions they should be pleased.

BTW, in today's society I probably should say "I took pictures of my grandkids" instead of "I shot my grandkids" LOL

Juli,

My hat's off to you for being so generous with the hand-me-downs. I appreciate (and I'm sure others do as well) all the comments you make on these forums. I tried to email you a personal "thank you" a couple of weeks ago, but I think AOL (that's what I use) has a problem because when I click "send this user an email" I get an error message. I'll try it on IE.

PS- I've also got a 5D and 30D and I think I'm going to get a 40D also. I'll think about being benovelent like you.

I should sell the lens and pay for a trip. Actually, my cousin is the executor of my estate, and I feel I owe him for the trouble he will have getting the house ready for sale from 150 miles away. Of course the sale of the house might put one of the kids through part of college.

Well the DO is a little shorter, but heavier, I like this one best.

…just few days ago to shoot the soccer game of my neighbour’s son. I knew already that this lens is great (I used it for BIF) and it proved once again that it is very fast and accurate on 30D and AI Servo.

The conditions were difficult even for more expensive lens (read L, lol). It was 7pm, hazy and the red sun was already down on the horizon. Not much light left, but still I got hundreds of great shots, even in 5 fps.

Even for night shots it’s great. AI Servo, 5 fps, it’s no problem for this lens. Yesterday I had a thread on 30D forum (upsss, i meant 40D, lol) where I posted few pictures taken in night conditions with this lens, if interested to see…

this morning. The 10 year old kid plays baseball and football, so I hope they will enjoy it. I also had two 420EXs, so I sent them one for flash shots since I'm not using multiple flash setups these days since I got two ABs.

That was really generous of you! I am sure they will be thrilled to use the gear, and you will have a great time viewing the photos they take from it!

So far when I sent the 20D I've gotten back two photos of baby racoons they are rescuing. LOL. I hear the 10 year old is really enjoying the camera. I'm not sure how he's using it. I hope not in dummy mode, but he probably is. I need to call and ask since he's being homeschooled. I can catch him at home during the day. I was hoping the dad who knew something about cameras would use it.
