Now to decide: 40D or 5D

I have owned the 5D for near 2 years and love the FF but feel I am missing some action and wildlife shots so am quite interested in the 40D. I think the two will make a good combination and can see good points in both.

I had a play with both the 1DMkIII and 1DsMkII over the weekend and don;t feel ready for the size and weight of them.

I plan to wait for for the 40D to settle in a bit and review it in a few months.

That's my plan too. I think the features (live view, motorised mirror, build) of the 40D surpass the 5D, but no doubt the 5D MkII will add all these and more.

I've been waiting for several years for a reason to upgrade my 10D and the 40D is it. I'll use it to grow my business and then add the 5D MkII or 1D MkIII as my main camera with the 40D as a second camera and the 10D as an emergency backup.

Also I'll use the price difference between the 5D and 40D to buy a quality lens and a new 580 flash, and maybe that nifty wifi grip, so overall the 40D makes more sense for me.

Cheers,
gL

5D is basically a bigger and better 20D... I belevie the new 5DII will also pretty close to 40D except a DD sensor and it may share some of the better feature from 1DMarkIII such as the more advanced AF system and true weather seal.
Get 40D now, and 5D replacement next spring!

Coming: EF 85/1.2 L II
Later: 100-400/4.5-5.6 L IS
Waiting 24-70/2.8 L IS

Think I will sell my 5D and get a 40D, I have a 30D with the Canon 17-55 on it and I like that lens better than my 5D with Canon 24-70L, I know that I will lose the 24mm but the 17-55 has IS, plus I also have the 10-22 for wide

I hope 5D replacement doesn't throw away IQ advantage by excessively increased resolution.

I'd be happier with the new 5D having 1D3/40D sensor improvements but at the current 13MP resolution to get an actual increase in image quality.

That, plus all or most of the 1D3 body features would make a killer camera.

Some (or all) of that may be offset by the 14-bit per channel of DIGIC III - not in the 5D. Interesting to see what will exist in the 5D's upgrade, if and when it's released.
Naturally the 5D's full frame sensor is going to give you better DR,
IQ will depend more on your lenses than the camera.

I bought my 30D 3 months ago and had been shooting together with a 350D. The launch of 40D doesn't really impact me alot as I plan to go for FF body, but it somehow tells me that Canon loves to surprise their customers. However, 5D might be due for replacement soon so I think the best thing I could do is to wait for it. It will be nice to shoot with a 30D + 5D (replacement) so that you'll get 2 sets of focal length range from your current set of lenses without having to use 1.4XTC on a FF body.

I've been thinking of upgrading from 20D to 5D for some time now.
The feature set doesn't matter so much but I want the camera with the
best IQ and DR.
Looks like the jury is still out wrt DR. 14-bit processing on the 40D may or may not better than 5D.

However, if you're looking for high ISO performance then it's probably safe to say that for now, 5D is king.

Personally, I feel that lens choices should be a much more important, if not the most important, factor you should consider when deciding between. For example, I do a lot of wide angle and low-light work, I need a standard zoom that starts at 24mm (24-105 IS), and I need a 20mm prime lens with a very fast aperture and narrow DOF (Sigma 20/1.8). 1.6x doesn't give me those, at least not with the lenses that are currently available.

OTOH, for telephoto a 10mp 1.6x crop sensor will give you more reach than the 5D. So it all depends on what and how you shoot.

When the new 16-35 Mk II lens became available I made up my mind that if Canon offers another round of double rebates then that lens and the 5D will be my choice.

Yes there may be a 5D replacement in 2008 but the price would probably be about $3295 (US) where as with double rebates the present 5D would be about $2100 (US) or less. Be a Frugle Fotog I'm still enjoying my 10D and see no need to replace it with another 1.6X.

I'm in a similar situation, but if I'm honest with myself. The 40D may fit my shooting style/budget better than a 5D. Not to take anything away from the 5D, but I anticipate the 40D's performance in IQ will be 9/10ths of the 5D (at least as far as where I'm concerned).

The successor to the 5D is another story, but also will be much more expensive. At this moment, I'm leaning towards the 40D. It is a significant upgrade to my 20D in every way that matters to me.

Boiling it down to the simplest terms this is how I look at it: if I'm a wide angle guy I go with the 5D, If I'm a telephoto guy I go with the 40D, if I'm a snapshot / family / vacation shooter I go with a 400D.

I'm a rank amateur currently shooting with a Rebel Xt. I take mostly event shots of the family, but really enjoy nature landscape and portrait work. I had all but committed to buying a 5D in the spring, but I missed the rebate period and refused to spend the full amount ($2700 at the time) for a body only.

I think I would enjoy full frame, but upgrading to the 40D is seriously attractive for me. I could save $1000, and pick up the 18-55 f/2.8 IS to help out on landscape shots. Even if I got the 5D (even if it's around $2000 after rebates in the fall), I'm wondering if the 40D isn't plenty of camera for me. After all, I'm still learning a lot, and haven't even "mastered" the Xt yet.

Any recommendations ?

Can anyone with experience shooting on the 30D tell me how it does on landscape shots ? What about low-light ?

I would recommend the 5D for you..

Actually you will achieve the same with better results just by cropping photos from the 5D...

I think you answered your own question - you've been wanting a full frame for quite a while now.
