Doh.

I'm sure I've read a number of times in this forum, and I myself have also been guilty of thinking that Oly can't provide a proper grip for the 510 because there are no axillary contacts for the extra shutter release etc.

Well my battery cover just fell off. Strange I thought? it isn't broken, why would they make it so easy to detach?

So I had another look in there. Sure enough, it does NOT have the extra contacts as per the E300 and E1 grips, but tell me my eyesight isn't failing .... aren't those metal contact squares on the SIDE of the battery compartment ??

Lets hope.

PS - oly - don't screw up and leave the extra function/ael buttons off the grip like with the E300 please.

Cheers

Well, it makes it easier to replace and also being detachable means that it's harder to break - nice thinking on Olys part :) ....

Sorry to say this but those are not metal. I agree they sort of look like contacts though. To convince myself I brought out the multimeter.

THEORETICALLY, Oly can provide us a battery grip with only the three contacts on the bottom but I consider that highly unlikely.

Those two thingies at the bottom of the battery compartment sure look shiny and bright. If they are not metallic contacts for a future battery grip, what are they? That kind of thing is there by design, not for looks.

How did you use the multimeter to test the electrical nature of the two shiny objects, henq? The response of the multimeter will depend on whether and how they are connected internally.

They're just Pressure Springs to stop the battery from rattling about !!

Well I wrote the post seconds before I rushed out the door so its only now I've had a chance to go back and double check.

I confess I didn't believe you - they sure do look like four metal squares to me (in fact mine seem to have marks on them as if they've been tested in the factory). However I've also just dug the multimeter out and no matter how much I fiddle and prod about, I can't get any sort of reading, so I can only conclude that you are right and they are not metal. Bugger.

I bet they were put there though with the intent of being able to fit contacts for a grip. The marketing department probably decided they wanted another differentiating feature for the new E30 so they left the feature out at the last min..... oops ... said too much .....

You're looking at the wrong camera mate! the E400 does indeed have
springs. The 510 doesn't!
