LX2 max SDHC capacity?

I am taking my LX2 on holiday soon and would like to use RAW (+jpeg). Unfortunately as many will know this requires lots of storage capacity. I am not interested in an image tank, I am hiking so the laptop is out so I need some big SD space for 10 days worth of photos.

I could buy lots of 2GB cards or get an 8GB card (I am assuming that 16GB cards aren't available yet?). I don't buy the 'all the images on one card is a risk' mantra. Consider that a 2GB card is to an 8GB card what a 512MB card is to a 2GB card and nobody suggests using multiple 512MB cards these days.

So, will the LX2 take an 8GB SDHC card? The manual says that 4GB is ok but I expect that it was published before 8GB cards existed. The SDHC (SD 2.0) standard runs to a max of 32GB as far as I can see, so if the LX2 is SDHC standard compliant it should take the 8GB without a problem.

Has anyone tried an 8GB SDHC in their LX2?

You've probably read the Manual, but it does say in one spot -
"You can only use an SDHC Memory Card
if using cards with 4 GB or more capacity. "

Note the " or more " .. so it really should surely be the case that as long as it does comply with SDHC standards and say so , an 8Gig would be OK...
Maybe somebody has used one and will pop up here to confirm ...

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I've currently got a couple of 8GB SDHC cards I'm swapping in and out of the LX2, and they perform beautifully, especially the class 6 one. You shouldn't have any problems using any of the cards currently on the market.

Thanks for your reply.

I know the SDHC spec and in a perfect World, I would expect the camera to comply to it completely allowing cards up to 32GB to be used.

SDHC Specification Ver. 2.00
• Capacities* 4 GB–32 GB
• Dimensions** 0.94" X 1.26" X 0.08"
( 24mm X 32mm X 2.1mm)
• No. of pins 9 pins
• Voltage 2.7 to 3.6V
• File System FAT32

However this isn't a perfect World and manufacturers don't always stick to the spec completely, which is why I need confirmation of actual use.

That's true with many camera makers, except that Panasonic is one of the small group that actually defines the SD standard. When other manufacturers had to keep updating cameras as SD cards increased in size Panasonic cameras just went on working - because they adhered very tightly to the spec that Panasonic itself had defined.

If a Panasonic camera that can handle SDHC cards at all can't handle any SDHC card I'd be very, very surprised given the track record. It's more likely that the card isn't compliant than the camera if there's an issue.
