After researching for several months and saving up a bit, I finally made my purchases yesterday. Here's what I got so far:

Nikon D80 + 18-55mm Kit (using the kit lens as a backup)
Nikkor 18-200mm VR DX
Hoya Super HMC UV filter 72mm
Nikon SB-400
4gb Trancend 150x SD card
Tamrac Velocity 6x bag

Now I just need an extra battery, a portable tripod, and circular polarizer.

Did I miss anything? Or should I be good to go?

Thanks everyone for all your help in making my buying decision. I tried out the D80 at the store many times and love the camera, so I can't wait to get it in my hands next week.

Sounds like you've made some fine choices. You'll be sure to get some great images with this kit. Yes the extra battery is a good idea as well as an extra SD card. A fast 2gb is less than $40 these days. My suggestion on a tripod is to get a sturdy - easy to use model that will not jeopardize your investment. Portability is not worth disaster and I've had some equipment hit the ground before - it's no fun. Have a good time with your camera and post some of your work so that we can rip it apart. :) just kidding--

Just my 2 cents on filters. When you start getting filters like a CP, you may want to consider getting a larger filter size (e.g. 77mm) and then use step down adapters to use them on your smaller lenses. This way you can purchase just one CP and use it on all your various lenses with the appropriately sized adapter.

On another note, get a rocket blower for use in cleaning "dust bunnies" off your sensor.

And I should have added I'm on a budget, so I'm always looking for something that'll work for the lowest price possible. went to Circut City a few weeks ago, and bought a non-Nikon battery for my D50 for 24$, and a big heavy Sunpack tripod, the 7575, for 79$. Like another poster said above, It's not very portable, but I had a tripod that was portable..lacked the stability you want in a tripod. I don't mind the extra weight on a hike, because of the results.

hmm...yea, I probably should've use a step up ring and 77mm UV filter. I'll do that with the CP filter. Thanks for the tip.

Is a Manfrotto 785SHB Modo Mini a good choice?

A very nice package with only one thing missing IMO. In fact, the SB400 is a very nice flash but it does not perform high speed sincronisation with the D80. The D80 sincs up to a maximum shutter speed of 1/200 second (the D40, D50 and D70 all have a max sinc speed of 1/500 sec). For higher speeds, the camera can sincronise with a flash but only if the unit supports high speed sinc - currently only the SB 600 and 800 can do it with the d80.

High speed sinc with flash is very useful for fill-flash in bright daylight in situations where one uses high shutter speeds with small apertures. I use it all the time. It is perfect for lighten shadows in people faces in backlight, etc. Depending on your photo habits, this may be important for you. If so, you may want to consider the SB 600 or 800.

I had a circular polarizer on my 17-35mm, I think it is a 72mm size. I bought the D80 with the 18-135 kit lens, and used a step ring to fit the same CP on that lens.

I then noticed that some photos had 4 dark corners when I was using the step ring + CP on the 18-135 mm. I experimented by removing both, no dark corners. then step ring only, no dark corners, and no stepring, handheld CP, no dark corners...

I was forced to conclude that somehow only when the stepring AND CP are used together I got the 4 dark corners. which is difficult to explain physically!

anyone here can explain why? it puzzles me... I need to find these samples...

I have the D80 and SB-600.

To this point my flash pictures stink! My fault I know. Last night somehow I got the 600 to zoom to match my lens. It made the pictures better but there are still shadows.

When I take the 600 off the camera wireless it stops the zoom from auto-adjusting.

Will it high speed sync wireless?
Will it auto zoom wireless?
Will the built in flash high speed sync with the 600 wireless.

The problem with step up rings is that when you use them the lens hood won't fit.
There is nothing like a lens hood to make you look like a pro!

I can fill two 2gb cards on one battery with my D80, even when chimping a ton.

Personally, I use my monopod FAR more often than my tripod. I find that a tripod takes longer to set up, takes up way more room and, obviously, presents a tripping hazard to others (and my camera). My monopod is fast, easy, mobile and never in anyone else's way.

Of course, macros and long exposures require a tripod which is why I have one also but for general use I'd get a monopod first. My $.02.

im guessing you are not bouncing the flash. a "better bounce card" costs $5 to make and should allow you to bounce and still get good forward light.

if the ceiling is too high, throw an apollo soft box on the flash and have fund.

You are correct that you need an extra battery but you also need

an extra SD card. You never know when one will fail, get dropped, stolen, eaten by a bear, or whatever. Never leave home without an extra battery and an extra SD card.

You are better off with at least the SB600. If you can't affort it, then don't buy those filters at this time.

The SB600 and 800 are more versatile than that SB400.

Do you need two flashes? SB-800 and SB-600? My on camera flash seems very weak and doesnt reach very far.

MB-D80 Battery Pack. Holds two batteries - one drains to zero until the other kicks in. Makes it feel like you can shoot forever. Adds a bit a weight to the camera which I like. The vertical grip also adds another push-button, command wheel and AE-AF lock - perfect for vertical shots.
