Official firmware is up

I just sent it to you by e-mail, but I don't know about installing
it until they post it again. Maybe it was defective or something.
No harm in being cautious, but it was probably a case of someone releasing it a couple of hours too soon.

0!:00 BST is supposed to be the time - it's not on the Japanese site yet. Perhaps they're a bit pedantic about these things?

Wouldn't that be something if the leaked firmware is just fine but the "official" version has problems.

Well, at least you're covered by Pentax warranty if the official firmware guts your K10d.

:-)

That's the message I read when I tried to install the firmware.

... but apparently some people in this thread have installed it without problems.

I've got it here, but am going to hold off on installing - but I take your point QC and you may be right. Maybe someone was overzealous or was working in the wrong time belt.

Many thanks... but if it s a 8 Meg file, my mail account probably won't take it.

However with the file being removed I should probably wait a short time for the official link to reappear. Who knows if they just deleted the link only because it was too early, or if they found some kind of fault....

As I use the high ISO very often, I'm most interested in a possible reduction of the high ISO banding that my camera suffers from.

regards,
Thomas

Nice to see that Pentax is just as put together when it comes to firmware releases as they are with ship dates for their products. Reminds me of last year when they couldn't get their shipping information for the K10D straight.

Oh, this builds so much confidence in the company. First they allow to be leaked unofficial firmware, then they release the official firmware and then they remove it.

Pentax is a joke of a company. Which is very strange. I thought the Japanese were much more together than this.

The zipped file is only 1.55 mb. The file inside of it is the 8mb file.

The "zipped" file is actually a self-extracting file. When you click on it, it will extract into two files.

I guess Pentax is going to wait until the 23rd to release it.

The Japanese are the invention of Just-in-time (JIT) logistics. Maybe they thought it was not just the right time.

Or maybe there was such a rush for the downloading that we were all preventing their bread-and-butter customers from downloading their Optio firmware.

By the way, I really want an Optio to keep in my shirt pocked when I don't have my dSLR with me - which one should I get (I need something to think about while I'm waiting for a re-posting of the firmware and I can't face the prospect of reading all the specs on the Optios while I'm still trying to get through the table of contents of my K10 manual)

Now I got it and installed it. It worked just fine.

I did a quick&dirty test shot just before the update and after it - just pointing the camera to the ceiling of my room. Both were in-camera JPG, quality.

The image after the update looks definitely a bit brighter. Still with some traces of high ISO banding. Probably I'm seeing ghosts but I have the impression that it is a bit less than it was before. Overall image quality of course is the same as before.

regards,
Thomas
