After much deliberation, I decided to buy the Fuji s6500fd and am now eagerly awaiting its arrival.

However, I have some doubts that my attraction to the largest-possible, 2gb Olympus xd card was the best decision, as it actually seems pretty slow on paper. Is there a real difference between the "regular" M-type and high-speed xd picture cards when using the s6500fd? Can anyone recommend a good, fast xd card for this camera?

Thanks

The type H is faster (only available up to 1gb at the moment), however you shouldn't notibe any difference in normal use.
Things to be aware of.
Firstly If you shoot RAW a type H will be a bit faster shot to shot.

Secondly When shooting movies with a type M you MAY need to format the card more regularly to keep it at its optimum performance.

You should format regularly anyway...and its usually faster than erasing anyway if you have a lot of photos to get risd of.

thanks Darin,

I guess I'll try my 2GB xd and see how well it works for me before I get an H-type. Hopefully, they'll have larger H-type xd cards soon!!

Cheers

I have 2 512mb 'H' cards at the moment and I feel safer having them over 1 larger card.

Post Processing is a Fuji cameras best friend.

well, the thing is, when I'm on a trip and taking lots of pics, I don't want to have to fiddle around changing cards very often...though of course losing one full 2 or 4gb is MUCH worse than losing a 512mb card! I guess you just have to compromise - and get a good card-holder.

The Fuji xD 6 slot card tray (semi clear) is superior to the Olympus (blue tinted) xD card tray. The difference is the size of the lever tab fitting the notch on the side of the xD card. The Olympus tabs are too fat. The smaller tabs on Fuji make the action of inserting and removing cards more precise and secure.

For speed it appears the Olympus type H is best though I have not compared the speeds precisely.

Is it just me? xD has totally gone down the krapper because of the introduction of new types not compatible with some cameras. Were the developers insane?? Now you can't be sure whether one type or another will even work! (I'm sure the 6500fd is a great camera though, so good luck with it. I just bought a 5600 which was great value at GBP 140. xD-only was a negative point though).

While xD surely has its issues, there's little serious question that the 5600 is the world's best buy on an insanely good bridge camera. Highly doubtful you'll have any regrets. And, by the way, both Fuji and Olympus have card compatibility charts on their sites to guide prospective purchasers.

Everyone knew that XD was going to be a white elephant from the start, SD was going strong when Fuji / Oly introduced it and it was only a matter of time til size restrictions and compatibilty issues came along (it has no Controler chip onboard and this is always a sign of tears before bedtime) .

Maybe Oly and Fuji will finally learn to stop Pissingabout and stick to standards..

Anyway as far as your 5600 is concerned, get a 1Gb H card and that's your XD buying done and dusted, the only hassle you'll have is handling the horrible little card and trying not to get greasy prints on the contacts.

And Tianium replied:

I am about to purchase a S6000fd, and so have been looking at the various xD options. I've got to say that I'm slightly confused, because most sites seem to show only the type M cards, and my understanding (which Tianium appears to confirm) has been that type H is faster. In just a few places I've seen type H cards listed in capacities up to 1GB.

But today I found a listing for a 2GB type H xD card at a major vendor site, and it's even a Fujifilm branded card. I rechecked some other sites, and could not find any other listings for 2GB type H cards. So what's going on?

By the way, is it OK for me to mention here the site where I found this card? I'm neither affiliated with them nor making a commercial announcement, I'm just trying to determine the best card to buy.

More from Tianium replied:

Sounds like this could be a very nice benefit for the S6000fd, since shot times for raw are not so speedy.

format the card more regularly to keep it at its optimum performance.
Does this apply to type H as well?

Thanks for the advice!

Probably a misprint...As far as i am aware Fuji has NOT released a 2gb type H yet.

Still not very good but will be better than a type M. Any card is fastest when freshly formatted.

Again...Any card is fastest when freshly formatted. So it will still pay to format a type H regularly to keep it at its optimum but a type M is more critical.

Take a look at the following Fuji page:
http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital/accessories/card/index.html

The compatibility table notes type H cards as ranging from 512MB to 1GB, but up at the top they do show a DPC-H2GB(2GB).

Since I see that various merchant names are being mentioned in toehr threads, I'll note that the place where I saw this item being sold was at Amazon.com, and the listing included both the part number shown above and a photo of the item. Perhaps it's brand new. but if so I would expect everyone selling Fuji and Olympus to be crowing about it.

Great stuff....It took them long enough...
