e100rs& external flash?

Thanks JD. I'm going to paint it flat black with some epoxy paint when the weather here gets decent enough to do it outside. It will then look much better. I lucked out and the top bend puts the flash directly above the lens. The aluminum bar already had some predrilled holes and I just had to drill one for the base and add the rubber with some contact cement. I like the very small size.

Gary, you can pay now or you can pay later. In your line of work go with the FL-40, it communicates with the camera, does TTL, and emits a focus beam. Good luck

That's what I did after investing in a new Vivitar 285HV, I had misplaced my old one, and using a Digi-Slave 3000. One nice thing about the D-S is that it will fit in my holster front pocket where the others won't. And I can snap a folding cheap bracket onto the side of the holster. -- http://www.pbase.com/julivalley/galleries21oo , B-3oo3o4oJuli

Sure,

All flashes have a voltage that appears across the terminals of the hot shoe. Can be as low as 3 volts to over 600 volts. Numerous calls to Oly tech support have consistently yielded their recommendation that flash trigger voltage should be less than 12 volts for safe use in Oly digicams.

However, the manual for the 2100 and E100 does not say that high voltage flashes may damage the camera, only that they may not function properly.

To my knowledge no one has reported burning out their camera with a higher voltage flash, but many, me included, are hesistant to take the risk with a 500+ dollar camera, when the official word is don't use high voltage flashes.

The Vivitar 285HV, commonly used with Oly digicams, has a trigger voltage of 7 volts.

The Vivitar 2000 is a bit of a puzzle. Apparently Vivitar has manufactured several similar but different flashes with this model #, perhaps acounting for the variable reports of what the trigger voltage is.

I didn't realize this was an issue. I'll have to do some research.
Care to fill me in on the basics?

This is a bit off topic - for which I apologize.

I've been quietly lurking about this Olympus forum for several weeks (learning a TON I might add). I see "B&H" come up quite a bit as a source for various products. Can someone please clue me in to B & H? I assume there is a web address floating around somewhere.

Also....if there are any folks out there from the Dallas, TX area, do you have any local photo supply places that you would recommend? I'm fairly new to the area.

Thanks!
It's a good thing I don't live too close to B & H. --Oly E100RS

Has anyone had problems with their CB-04 cable snapping right where it attaches to the camera? I've been on five outings and my second cable just broke. Since it is at a right angle to the camera and made out of cheap plastic, it is very fragile. I have tried to contact Olympus by email but haven't gotten a response yet.
The second option is to use any flash bracket you want along with
the Olympus CB-04 cable. This set-up isn't compatible wit the
FL-40, but allows you to use any bracket you want with the 285-HV.
I went this route and use a Stroboframe bracket that I like very
much.

Either way you go, I think you'll find that the 285-HV is much
better than the internal flash. Good luck!

Andy.

Gary I am confused here. Your post was in regard to the E-100. If you use the CB-01 cable and the Olympus flash bracket then the Assist Focus light(red light) on the FL-40 will light up and work. Its does with mine. I can understand it working on the G2. Many of us have used the Off shoe Canon flash cable with the E-10 and Stroboframe flash bracket to extend the hot shoe to the flash bracket. It appears the pinouts are the same in the cable but I cannot speak for the camera's. From what you are telling it me it appears that they are. I would find out if the trigger voltage on the FL-40 is in spec for the G2 because you do not want to chance buring out the electronics on either the G2 or the flash. As far as quality goes gary I think the FL-40 is a very fine flash. I have owned a Pentax FTZ-400 flash that used to operate similarly. I own a Nikon SB-26 flash and I think the FL-40 is close to the quality of that flash. I have used the FL-40 with my E-20 and it focuses based on the lenses setting. I have put it on the E-100rs to test it and see if the Assist Focus light(red beam) would work and it did in a very dark room. So hope this helps you gary. In the long run like another said you would appreciate the FL-40 because its easy to use and communicates with the E-100rs that you use for work. An alternative if you are concerned is a Digi-slave flash but then you still will not get TTL that way. In my opinon TTL and communication is always worth the extra buck if you want the best results from your equipment.
