Hi all, a quick question, I need a hot tip - when I use my new 17-40mm L lens for flash shots at 17mm, I get a dark shadow at the bottom from the lens shadowing the flash on a wide angle lens. Is there a way to say put a piece of foam, foil or something over the exsisting flash to make it cover the blind area? Yeah, I know I should buy a 550ex but cant right now.

Chris,

I assume you are using the on camera flash and you are getting a shadow. I don't know of anyway to deal with this other than having the flash higher above the lense which means using a flash other than the on camera flash.

--I use my onboard flash with the 17-40 L but you have to get out past 24 mm to avoid the shadow, or else do as the above poster suggested, shoot wide and crop. I've gotten used to going beyond 28 mm I think. Just play with it a little and you'll see how it works.

try shooting with the camera upside down.

Built in flash will cause this problem because the size of the lens obstructs the light from the flash in the lower section of the photo. This is going to happen with most of the 'good' f2.8 type larger lenses.

Built in flash dates from the days of 35, 50 and 90mm prime lenses which were smaller and did not obstruct the light. You really need to get an alternative flash unit (there are lots to choose from) to use with that lens. You don't need to splash out on the 550EX in the interim (but it is very effective) - Sigma make a number of less expensive compatible units. In the long term though it is worth the money to save for the 550/580EX flashes.

Thanks for your responses. I guess the best solution is to get an external flash.
