SmugMug?

I just signed up for smugmug for a few reasons
1 - unlimited server space for any of the payment levels

2 - even the cheapest payment option (the one I signed up for) gives you a good amount of bandwidth
3 - they offer prints made by ez prints, which is supposed to be pretty good.

4 - in the future (when I get some more pictures up and when I buy the canon 20D), I'll upgrade my account to the professional account. This will provide me with an instant way to make money off of my prints, i.e. I won't have to transfer over to another website.

nothing's there (that's not password protected) yet though.
Has anyone used SmugMug? If so how is it? Are there any alternatives?

Thanks in advance,

dont send original file sizes, and make sure you watermark the most important ones.

Right, I'm going to have to remember to do that. For now, all that's up is a password protected gallery of pics from my cousin's wedding, and I don't think I would feel right making a profit off of my family. But that's a good reminder that since I plan on upgrading in the future, I oughta put a watermark for now.

This is not true. if you want the ability to order prints then it is necessary to send up full size images. Your images will be safe enough, there are configuration options for your gallery. You can specify that full-size images can not be accessed by anyone but you. Smugnug automatically resizes (makes smaller) your images (so they load quickly).

There is no storage limit on smugmug. When you send up full-size images (as many as you want) they stay safely on smugmug. This is a wonderful way to archive images. I burn my images to CD, I also send up the full size images to smugmug. If I don't want people to see certain images, but I want to keep them on smugmug, then I put them in a private gallery.

I have a "pro" account on smugmug. Please feel free to take a look:

Also, if you mention this code: mwTFiFIDvm8cI when you register you will save some money.

Smugmug offers a level of support unheard of. They are fantastic, and have helped me work through a few problems in quickly and effectively. They are really a wonderful group of people over there.

I chose pbase.

It's much faster and IMHO something about it is a little more professional looking.

I really wanted to like smugmug for some reason, but pbase just seemed to be the better choice for me.

Are you saying that ezprints prints their photos for smugmug?

My last three orders with ezprints were cropped and I had to reorder.

I'll admit, Pbase is great if you don't mind the space limits.

It's right on the smugmug website. They tested EZPrints, Ofoto, and one other (am in a rush, so can't check) and they say they chose EZPrints. Did you specify that you didn't want the photos cropped? If you order through smugmug, they give you an option to crop or not, and they also give you the option to get 4xD 5xD and 8xD pictures where there will be no cropping and no white bars. Then they pass it off the EZprints, who will print and mail you your photos.

Hi,

I chose pbase, primarily due to the interface customization it provided. The smugmug interface did not work for me and the level of customization they offer for interfaces was too limited for my purpose.

Besides the interface issue (a subjective opinion) I liked smugmug.

Also, do remember that a pbase account is $23 per year while a comparable pro smugmug account is significantly more ($90+ if I remember correctly)

I have successfully added payment systems to in pbase, so I am satisfied for now.

Feel free to take a look at http://www.arjunphotography.com (which is a pbase account)

Yeah, but isn't that $23 for only 200mb of space? On the first day of my standard $20 smugmug account I had uploaded 260mb worth of pictures.
Richard

$23 is for 200 mb (though slug is very lenient if you exceed)

Its really all a matter of preference. I assume you are uploading pretty much all shots that you take, and that too in full size .In that case, Pbase
may not be attractive.

I upload only those prints I intend to sell (even less than 1% of total photos I take) and never upload original sizes. Hence, even after 1 year of service, I have not even reach 80MB.

Ah yes, if I were selling I wouldn't have used all that space. Since for now I'm uploading photos to show to family, and in the future will still be uploading primarily to share, I'll be using tons of space.
Richard

If you actually want to use smugmug to sell prints, you really should use the original file. This will give the customer the best print.

It is possible to set up pictures to not be downloadable.

Just have to talk it over with the wife first. lol
