>> Challenge 21: Head and Shoulders Voting Thread >>

LOL I had a good laugh at this photo. Thanks Iso... I needed that to start off my day. Actually I liked the "cropped" version (I hadn't clicked on the photo to see the full size. Told the story very well. Thanks for sharing that one.

... this is just my opinion.

I stand behind my comments in the original thread. I think the rules made this challenge too limiting. There were some very good, creative shots, but for the most part the images were static, boring headshots. Technically, they were very good, and better than I am capable of producing, but not many really grabbed me. I didn't even vote in the eligible category because I couldn't come up with 5 that blew me away.

Before I get flamed into a piece of charcoal, my opinions are based on the fact that I just don't like headshots and never have. They just don't say anything to me. But, that doesn't mean I don't recognize the work and talent that goes into making a good one.

Obviously, by others' comments on this topic, I am alone in feeling this way, and I accept that. Not every challenge is going to appeal to every person. Hopefully the next one will be something I can get myself into. Looking forward to seeing what the next host comes up with.

You're absolutely entitled to your opinion. However, I don't feel it's the responsibility of the challenge host to come up with a topic that pleases everybody. In fact, it's the reward to the host to choose a topic they like, by virtue of their win in the previous challenge.

I promise we'll have the "Picture of Something You Like in Color, B&W, or Something Like That" Challenge.

Joe, Joe, Joe... A prerequisite for winning is entering at least one photo in the eligible gallery ;-P

Surprised to not see any authentic Reillyographs in the eligible gallery, in this home-field of yours. Of course, the winner seems to be a very worthy substitute Reillyographer...

Hadn't done too much commenting in the exhibition gallery during the run of the challenge - too many great photos stopped me from even trying. So instead of honorable mentions, I decided to comment as I looked through the gallery before voting - took almost three hours! I might have left a comment on your photo too (assuming you have some posted in the gallery), so please check out...

I had left more comments along the way in the eligible gallery and therefore didn't feel the need to do the same there (luckily, or I wouldn't have been done in time before the voting deadline).

Oh, yeah and I DID vote in both galleries...

and if I ever win, you guys are gonna be doing it my way......in colour!

I thought I would really get into this challenge....but I didn't. After the first weekend, I ceased to be excited about shooting someones head. And studio portraiture just isn't really me.

My potential models all did a runner....even my world famous model decided spending a weekend at a friends house was preferable to being painted, posed and shot. Oh well......looking forward to the next challenge.

No, you are not entirely alone....cos after seeing face after face after face in the galleries, I got a bit tired of them too. I think head shots are personal things......I love the ones of my kids but only because they ARE my kids.

In light of your comments Mike, thank you for the vote on my "Camera Shy" entry in the exhibition gallery.

Roberta, I hope you come up with something as good as last time you won. Complementary Colors was one of my favorite challenges!

Joe, here is a secret to improving ones chance on winning. Now this is a secret so don't let it out...

Children. Folks find them irresistable.

We hooked on it evolutionarily (humans display a high degree of paedomorphic regression). Photogenic children, and few are not, is your answer. No matter what the challenge put a child in the frame. Don't take it cynically, I voted for those adorable munchkins too. If you don't have a child and none can be borrowed, then go for an octarian or better (I did that this round, but I am afraid he looks too young in the submitted image). Not available? Choose a young woman. Consider the ratio of men to women that vote on these challenges. I would guess its at least 5:1 (hmm, I wonder why). By all means, do not, and I repeat do not photograph middle aged white man (unless down-and-out, in which case they look like an octarian). Cameras were not built for that purpose. Ooo, now there is a Challenge: Middle Aged White Man that Look the Part. I can hear the groans as this challenge is announced: louder than had the challenge been VW bugs. Refridgerators, now there is a challenge evoking a greater groan. Funny though, there is enough talent within the contributors to these challenges to make refridgerators photogenic. Now, wont that be something. "Go forth and make art of the nonphotogenic ordinary."

BTW I am pefectly cognizant, though not prepared, that I will now be the subject of intensive flaming. Charcoal Mark? Watch this....

A gorgeous photo, well deserving of first place.

Can't wait for the new topic, I thoroughly enjoyed your last challenge....and it's one where at the end of it, I really felt I had learned something new, then proceeded to put that knowledge to use.

Don't be discouraged by all the comments in the thread....if we all liked the same type of photos and all took the same kind of shots, we would all be very boring!

Gayle
Thanks Olaf and Ed! Gee, after all this discussion I'm afraid to
post the next topic. I almost feel that I should apologize for my
image.

You're new around here, aren't you?

I don't mean to have fun at your expense, but I'm dangerously close to being a one trick pony. Scan back through the Challenge galleries and you'll get to know my kids pretty well.

For the most part, I sat this one out because of excess life on other fronts. But, perhaps in part, because I'm trying to crawl out of my pigeonhole. It's just too damned easy to point the lens at adorable kids (Joe's objectivity shining through).

Not to steal your thunder, but I leaked the secret moons ago [ sMiLe ]...

I really do. I dont make a living out of it, so if no body else thinks much of them, does not matter too much. If they are devoid of originality by everyones reckoning, that not too serious. For years and years (actually decades), I never bothered to even share the images with anyone but my wife. As long as there is a thrill in hunting images and as long as I can gaze at my images for hours on end I will continue to photograph. If those are gone, no enthusiasm I might garnish from others would get me to spend the kind of money and time I do on this hobby.
