Maybe it was a duff camera since it was already returned before and the salesman sold it to me at a discount. $1300.

Here's my impression of the camera.

Positive - wonderful image quality. Low noise and great color repro.

Write speed and image display was surprisingly fast. Of course I had an Ultra II compact flash card.

The software that displayed each image setting was very helpful.

Negative - Constantly back focused. I had to throw out most of my pics.

AF and 3 fps just didn't seem fast enough for action shoot. Shots were out of focus.

Night shots didn't seem very good.

Looks like I'm waiting a little longer for the upgrade.

Hoping the AF is much improved.

Image transfer to computer using the USB cable took forever.

So buy a new one. You may have noticed that there are a few people who are supremely satisfied with their 10D; me included. Since it was a return, it's certainly a possibility that it was a dud. Don't give up on it.

Of course it's slow; USB 1.1 is about 12 Mbs. Use a USB 2.0 card reader.

You didn't get a very good deal at $1,300 for a returned camera.

You could've got a brand new one for $1,240 or better.

Did you have a chance to do some homework before buying?

I agree with Hanson, buy a new one, and this time, do some homework on pricegrabber.com or bizrate.com, for instance.

buydig.com was $1155 brand new last i checked.

auto focus isn't the end of things either, there's always manual if af won't do what you want every time...although it is a good thing to have a working af.

You guys are probably right but now I hear there's an upgrade coming out in a few months. I need fast AF to take action shots. The 10D doesn't seem to do it fast enough.

As for focusing manually, my eyesight is poor and it's rather hard to focus when it's wide open and there's a very thin DOF.

With good lenses, "L", you will get fast focussing. I can tell you from experience, you won't buy this camera, then attach a $350 lens and get TOP quality action shots. As for your mentioning "something new is coming out", well, you will pay ALOT more than $1200 which is the going price on 10D's. Canon isn't going to introduce a kick-a$$ camera, better than the 10D and allow them to be $300 or so difference in price. If the 10D's are selling for $1200, you can expect the next one to set you back $2000 PLUS! Just not in the common joe's price range.

From buydigital.com.

Shot some at lunch, (delivered at work), did the front/back focus test focus is dead on, got the 28-135 USM IS lens.

This is a very good package for me to start with. The Macro on the lens works so well.
Sitting in my cube shooting small objects. Focus is dead nuts on!!

I am so far impressed with the camera. Will UL shots tonight to PC.

The build quality is fantastic. I almost went with the D70, so glad I did not!!!!

If you want decent quality action pics I suggest that you improve your technique rather than relying on AF. Anything is possible if you have the right technique and the patience.

I was shooting with a 50 mm 1.4. I'm sure L lenses focus a lot faster.

I already have about $1000 worth of lenses so I'm done spending money on lenses. 35mm 50 mm and 100 mm macro.

I'm willing to pay $2000 if it has the AF speed and accuracy of the 1D.

Are you saying that you can get good results using manual focus on the 10D? For Sports? The 10D cannot be relied on for manual focusing and for many of us it cannot be relied on to accurately auto focus.

As I recall the Canon D60 body cost $2200. Less than a year later Canon released the 10D (an improved version of the D60) and the body cost............$1500. In my book that is $700 less than the camera it replaced.

I agree Mark,

However the AF should work, and even if MF can be a work-around, that does not negate the need for the AF to work as advertized.

I understand your disappointment but you are judging a camera by an overpriced returned sample!!! Why was the camera returned? Probably defective!!! Try again with a new camera and I think you will be very pleased.

Also, your ultra card makes no difference in the camera. You will only see improvement if you download with a usb 2.0 reader.

You will see even faster download if your computer has firewire and you get a fireware card reader. I know that if I use my USB card reader then my download for my 1 gig cf cards is around 15 to 20 minutes per card and with my firewire card reader the download is around 4 minutes. A big difference in speed.

I was shooting outside. Plenty of light. The ones that were sharp and correctly focused were dreamy.

a picture can't be both sharp AND dreamy at the same time...

as Mark Hewitson said above, improve your technique instead of blaming the poor camera... I'm no pro-expert-superman sports shooter, but I shot sports with a D60 and now a 10D without too much problems... skateboarding, all terrain bking, rollerskates... yes a 1D will do better but the 10D is no slouch. Maybe you are? LOL
are you still under warranty? can we return you to your mother? ;-)

some comments about your observations:

An UltraII in a 10D will accelerate nothing. It will be as slow as a 12x Lexar, because the camera is slow at writing anyway. You must be coming from a digicam to find the 10D fast at writing. Heck, even the 2002 Canon D60 is faster and more responsive than the 10D...

What were you dreaming of, expecting fast download speeds from the camera's USB????!!!! it's even slower than a $10 USB1.1 card reader!! nonsense, here.

a backfocusing camera isn't the end of the world... jsut send it back and have it fixed... my 10D backfocuses, but it's no big deal, I already shot 2 weddings with it, and frankly, the pics are beautiful.

If you want more than 3fps, you shouldn't have bought the 10D in the first place. Maybe 1 well-triggered shot is better than a 3fps "spray" hoping one of the pics will come out good?

What didn't you like about the night shots??! it's one of the best cameras for that!!
I was shooting outside. Plenty of light. The ones that were sharp
and correctly focused were dreamy.
