Canon Released a Raw -] Tiff Converter utility

I have tried to install the latest USB driver - but cannot find the exe file ?

Can anyone tell me how to install the driver ?

Thanks
CN
I'm thinking like you....I only want to install the raw converter.

When I double-click the usb361.exe file, do I get the option at
that point to install ONLY the converter?

Does the converter only create TIFF's or is JPEG an option?

Thanks,

Doug
Hi Nadim,
LOL! You sound like a little kid full with excitement! I guess we
know what that means!!;-)
That's funny, I just posted to Elazer awhile ago that I wasn't
going to download because my USB was working fine.......now, I'm in
the midst of doing just that! Dang...I need DSL or cable...that's
ok, only 18 minutes more to go :-(
I will try it out tonight and see how it is. Thanks for the heads-up!

Version 1.0.1, available on
http://www.usa.canon.com/support/files/psshared.html

The new USB driver 3.6 includes the RawConverter Utility 1.0.1. I
just tried it. When installed, you just double-click on the CRW
file in the Windows Explorer, and it launches the converter, which
has a window similar to the Twain driver, with white point select
(this is for Nahau).

On my Pentium III 866Mhz, the application starts with a preview in
less than 2 seconds, and the conversion takes 11 seconds.

That's cool: with Chris "Downloader", the RawBrowser from Dan and
this utility, I've got all I need for an effective usage of the RAW
files.

Nadim

Should just be a part of the whole install package. After you download the usb361.exe, you run that to unzip the files into a folder called USB_361. Inside that folder is a setup program. Run that to install both the USB driver and the raw converter. When you go back into your start menu-> programs-> canon utilities, you'll see both the entries for digital camera USB driver and Raw converter.

If you only want to install the raw converter, instead of running the setup in the USB_361 folder, run the setup program in the USB_361\98_ME_2K\RAWCONV folder.
Can anyone tell me how to install the driver ?

Thanks

I just tried it out and it works GREAT!!! YAAAAHOOOO!!! Guess
what...it will even open a .crw file downloaded from the G1 into
zoombrower! You know what that means right,......the .thm file is
no longer needed!!! Sheesh!! Chris went through all the trouble of
writing his software and now the .thm is not even needed. Man, if
Canon came up with this a few weeks ago, this forum wouldn't have
had to go through all the anxiety we went through!!! And, Chris
could have saved some time of his own. I will still use Chris'
Downloader though, as it is much faster than zoombrowser. hmmm, I
wonder if he will change his software now to get rid of the .thm.
I think that the .thm files are very handy and helpful. For example I'm using ACDSee Browser and I can view the directory with .thm/.crw files as thumbnails thanks to .thm files. ACDSee can't display the TIFF/EP-info, but it can display the EXIF-info from .thm files. Of course there are programs which can show TIFF-EP information but I don´t have any and don't want to install new program just for that.

Hi Samuli,

I agree, I'll save the daily images with THM's for you never know where you'll need them.

I suppose the new Canon CRW tool would be very easy to integrate to any viewer program like ACDSee, as the converter is a simple shell call (open with...).

I'd also like to see a thumbnail converter integrated to Windows 2000 filelist thumbnail view (it can thumbnail TIFFs but not CRW's). Maybe with code used by thumbnailers http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=964743 or http://studio-on-the.net/photography/forum/viewtopic.php?TopicID=68 . That sort of integration along the new Canon utility would give a good environment inside Windows 2000 for using and cataloging RAW's directly from desktop.

PS. Have you tried to batch convert TIFF's to LZW compressed, does ACDSee work well with those? It seems that LZW looses EXIF (at least in Photoshop 6), which is a pity as some way to losslessly compress TIFF's would be good for saving some CD-R's.

Hi Nadim,

Did you uninstall all of the old Canon software before installing the new software? Also, since I will transfer future images to my laptop by inserting the CF card into the PCMCIA slot via an adapter do I need any of the Canon software on my manchine? Right now I only have the TWAIN driver and Chris's downloader installed.

I am using ACDSee for image changes right now which is limited becaues it does not support .crw files. I am converting to .tif before I do anything to the image. Is there a better file type to use with ACDSee? I do not care about file size because I want the best possible quality file.

TIA for any info you can provide. Also thanks for making us aware of the new Canon software. Take care and happy shooting, Greg

Hi Pekka,

No but I havent tried it yet...well let's see; IrfanView no, ACDSee no, PaintShopPro 7 no(actually the EXIF-program crashes, file is OK! it can be loaded to PhotoShop/ACDSee Browser OK!). So far none of my progs can convert the TIFF to LZW compressed with EXIF-data. But I don't need the EXIF-data, because I have my files in my computer and CDs like this:
1. "D:\Digiphotos\04" where 04 is month number

2. in that folder is the actual photo folder, for example "07 My car", where 07 is the day of the month.

3. in that folder I keep small JPGs made from TIFFs (size 512x384) and RAW-folder where I keep .thm, .crw and .txt (EXIF data as text file from Chris Breezes Downloader).

4. When I need the photos, I check from those 512x384 photos which one to use and then acquire the file to photoshop (or now use the RAWconverter). I don't want to keep those large TIFFs because I can make new ones any time I need. If I need EXIF-data I check it from txt-file or from the EXIF-data of .thm-file (ACDSee Browser can show this information)

When I burn my photos to CD, I make HTML-album from each of "## subject description"-folders (where ## is day of the month) with ACDSee Browser. Then I use my DirToHTML-program, which makes the main index files for each month and the main index page of CD. Now I can take a look of my photos with internet browser and photos aren't too big for browser usage.

BTW. You can easily make convertions with IrfanView, for example I make my "thumbnails" (512x384) easily and same time sharpen them a little. I recommend using "Resample" function, it makes thumbnails much better looking.

I just installed it. I took a photo in RAW format, went to Window's Explorer, double clicked on the file and a window (the usual that came up before to modify a RAW photo) came up, to save it in Tiff...

HOWEVER, I'm not sure if I did right, but before installing the USB 3.6.1 driver, I uninstalled the Twain driver (?). The camera is still working and upon linking it to the computer's usb, the Zoombrowser comes up, etc...

Should I have uninstalled the TWAIN driver? Should I install it back?

Thanks,

Marcel

It is somehow slower in 16bit and that is what you shoud use to get
the most out of it.
Indeed !

ZoomBrowser, Bible and the new Canon RAW Image Converter

Converted a batch of 10 RAW images, in a directory containing both the ,crw and .thm files, to 16 bit tiffs. Default settings (As Shot) and for Bible no Auto Level, Tone Low, Monitor Corrected, sRGB and no other corrections selected.

RAW capture times

ZoomBrowser – 29.5 seconds/image
Bible – 12.5 seconds/image
RAW Image Converter – 33.4 seconds/image

16 bit .tiff file sizes

ZoomBrowser – 18,237
Bible – 18,241
RAW Image Converter – 18,238

Resulting images

ZoomBrowser and RAW Image Converter,, no discernible difference. Bible images appear about 1/3 ev too dark, making the images appear slightly more saturated.

Could be that I just don’t know how to drive Image Converter yet but batching doesn’t seem to work,,, need to specify an output file name/location and then press Save for each image.

I installed it on my Win2k Server and ZoomBrowser can be opened. I haven't tried the RAW converter though.

I just installed the driver per Canon's instructions and after reading all the current posts here. The download and installation went off without a hitch. I took a few shots in Raw mode and opened the Twain driver with Photoshop being the host application. Whenever I click on a RAW image it just gives me the usual screenshot of 'downloading RAW image data' and then the photo is in Photoshop but I don't get a separate converter window for TIFF or white point select or anything for that matter that I didn't see before. What am I doing wrong if anything?

Thanks. Ted

Uwe, Phred,

the Canon G1 works / converts only to 8 bits.. hence the message. As for 16 bits D30 files, the Bible is faster... Eric needs to fix the white/balance correction algorithms still.

Hi Greg,

I did not install the USB driver yet.. just the converter utility that is included among the USB driver files. Unzip the usb361.exe, and extract the RawConverter folder only. On a WinME, it worked fine this way.

HiTed,

open the usb361.exe with Winzip or similar tool, and extract the RawConverter utility only.. It has a separate Setup.exe that you need to launch. From there on, all you have to do is double click on the CRW files on the Windows Explorer.

It looks like PolyView is most convinient picture viewer for G1 users - it

generates thumbnails right from CRW and works really fast, much faster than ACDSee or ZoomBrowser and it works fine with CRWCONV - just right click on thumbnail, context and open.

They have indeed pulled it. A post in rec.photo.digital stated that a Canon source said this was due to a download problem, not a software issue, and they will reinstate it ASAP. HTH.
