I'm trying in vain to write and action here. I have not found a frame I like. So, I'm trying to write the action to place the image off center. I'm thinking single bevel for the inner matt but would like more than just a line. (more d3), then I'm looking for a nice beveled edge for my frame.

This one was a hard one to write. :-) Here is where I am right now.

Thanks,
Joe

There are frames like this in Extensis Photoframe 2.5 and AutoFX Photographic Edges - This one does look good though. I would be interested in seeing a action for something like this. Keep up the good work.

Joe,

What do you think of this:

That inner bevel around the photo is exaclty what I was looking for.

Joe
Joe,

I'll email you my layered PSD files, instructions detailing the steps I used to do this and the action for the frame. Took about 2 minutes to do all this. Took 10 minutes to read your post to figure what you wanted as an end result... ;–)

over 6 hours. :-)

Thanks!!
and I've been following this thread and the other--and following leads/threads, googling for examples, tutes--and trying to replicate--all afternoon LOL. This is exactly what I've been looking for also. I thought I was leaning toward a Polaroid transfer type frame, but actually, this is exactly what I am looking for for my b/w=monotones.

I'll continue to watch with interest. One question--did you create the 'filed neg carrier' frame with brushes or scan one in? I've been trying with brushes, etc.--also found a 'frame' myself, but again--I'd like to make each one unique. Guess that will mean me figuring out what works best and then doing it for each unique image.

Are you going to use these for web use only--or will you print some? Since I no longer shoot film at all--and never had a darkroom, I would like to try printing some of these--not to 'hoodwink' anyone into thinking I'm shooting film, full frame, etc.--but just to 'contain' the image---and I find these a bit more interesting than a very simple black heavy stroke I think--at least I want to try them printed.

Yeah, I've been looking for Polaroid Transfer and negative carrier framing actions myself. Any ideas where I could find these??

There is a good tutorial for Polariod transfer but its not an action

http://www.creativepro.com/story/feature/18750.html I found a Polaroid transfer 'frame' that I dled (can't remember where) and used it as a layer--worked pretty well with 'multiply' and some finagling.

I wish. What I did was find one already made. Then used the extract tool to take out the center. I made it transparent and left the hole at 8x10.

I resize my image, then past the image on a large new blank page. Then select the carrier image and paste over the top, line it up then recrop. Beats getting filings in the fixer I guess but still haven't found it in an action.

Now all I need is the frame to go with it. :-)

If you copy the image to a white background, that gives you the inner matt.

If you don't use an inner matt, it still makes a very clean frame.

I had written my frame action basically as a learning process and tried to make it somewhat unique for my own styles. I'm sure that there are many illogical or redundant steps since I don't know all the fine points of PS. However, since the action runs through all the steps automatically, that makes little difference.

One thing that I have done is to make the photo image layer on top, above the Matte layer. The "bevel" of the matte around the photo is part of the photo layer rather than the matte.

It is easy to make the matte a little longer in one dimension during the action (by tuning on the dialog box), then move the photo and bevel to the desired offcenter location after the action is complete.

This screen shot shows my layers after running the frame action.

In this example, I added 40 pixels to the default length of the matte while the action was running. At the end of the action, the photo is centered, but selecting the photo layer and the move tool, I just Shift/up arrow 4 clicks to move the photo up 40 pixels.

By having all the layers separate, I can easily edit any of them. In this case, I did several simple changes:

1. My action default uses PS bevel/emboss for frame shaping. I like Eye Candy better, so I turned off the PS bevel and ran the Eye Candy plug in on the frame layer.

2. I added color to the matte and the "wall" background using colors selected from the photo. I often add textures to these layers also.
3. Finally, I moved the photo up to leave a larger matte at the bottom.
