How old was the guy ? Yves, did you get a visit from a detective yet ? That might give you clues on how it will go down for the s.o.b I stopped a guy a while back trying to make an escape after a failed attemp at stealing some transport trucks close to my place....This was around 3-4 A.M. At 8 A.M a detective was at my door for an interview..almost a year later had to testify in court.

Aussi, penses-tu que c'étais plus un crime d'opportunité de sa part ou un vrai habitué...?

Combien de temps va-t-il rester en dedans ?

Parrions sur pas longtemps.
Now, this happened at 7:45AM in a parking lot of a Tim Horton shop
in Laval.

I was coming back from the restaurant with a coffe in my hand and
proceded to unlock the car's door when I come across an old friend
of mine (did not see him for at least 3 years).

We started to chat and Blah Blah Blah ...

My car was running (thanks to my auto starter, I can AC the car
before getting in) and the doors were all unlock but mind you, I
was standing about 4 feet away in front of the car (always facing
the car because the 3 bags I carry with photo equipment were in it).

Now check this out ...

I see this morronick jer* getting near the car, looking it up for
content and proceding to open the passenger's door. I am in shock
that this guy did not notice me standing about 5 feet from him. My
friend got to him first (in the back of him of course) and I zap on
his side and ask him:

-- Do you need any help ? -- he replies ...
-- No no, it's fine I am just getting my camera to take a picture
-- ...
(one bag was open as I always leave a camera ready to shoot)

So far so good ...

I then told him: -- This is my car and my equipment buddy ... but
before I could finish my sentence, he tries to escape but
unfortunately for him, my huge friend (6' 3' -- 240) was behind him
and glue him to the floor ... I took my cell phone, called 911 and
had the police in very quickly to arrest him (remember, this was a
donut restaurant, there is always a police car next to them).

Police asked me if I wanted to press charges (knowing that he did
not take anything from the car but attempted to ...) I said yes why
not.

Moral of the story, I am happy I was not alone where I would have
probably lost it and kicked the hell out of him (even though, I am
not the violent type) and asked questions after ...

Well, this is for Jonathan F ... 1 crook catched up, several to
go ...

Not a visit but a phone call. I say he was around 30, maybe 34 max.

He did not look overly nervous when the cops got to him and he seemed to know his rights quite well so my initial thoughts is he was a recidivist or someone well trained. Doing this when people are standing 6 feet away from you takes nerves of steel I guess and when he initially bent over to look into the car before opening the door, I did not really move but I whispered to my friend that someone was looking up the car (cause I was facing it). It is only when he proceded to open the door that I realized what was really happening and kept saying to myself -- He must see me in front of the car --

I guess he did not think it was my car. The car was running from the automatic starter, keys were still in my pockets. He did not even boudge when my friend got in the back of him, only when I told him it was my equipment did he realize he was fooked ...

we drove around montreal East...not too far from you Yves...took him to downtown to the Stade Olympique and kept going....passed Henri Bourassa metro station...(where i used to take the Laval bus) =)
You know, on sunday morning, I was on my way to old montreal to
hope and meet you in there but I got a call just before I got into
the metro station and decided to abort ...
would have been cool, we were there saturday night.

I wanted to get there at 8-ish on friday so we could shoot a
concert that we were guest listed for... but it didn't happen.

I think we drove around old montreal all sunday evening.

Funny story, Yves.

In a sense, my D100 happened as a result of losing my 990 when my house was broken into. Insurance is a good thing...

Underscores the importance of keeping good backups of digital images. What if your CDs/DVDs had been stolen by a thief who rifled through your things? I frequently tell myself that I need to make duplicates of my archives to keep offsite, but I still haven't gotten around to it yet.

In my case, I never thought I'd see anything that had been stolen again, but I got a call one day from the police asking me to come take a look at "some" recovered items they had from an arrest. Turns out they had enough to fill a small meeting room, including most of the items stolen from my house (and plenty of others). The 990 was no where to be found, but it gave me an excuse to step up to the D100 like I wanted to do anyway.... :-)
