Does anyone have any strong feelings either way about a Sigma 180
3.5 Macro on a 1Ds? Good, bad....?

I'm going to buy one or the other. leaning towards the Sigma. Seems to have better build and quiet AF.

From the pictures that I have seen I can't tell them apart.

But

The Canon 100 Macro still intrigues me.

DOF is a function of the camera sensor size, lens focal length, aperture and distance from the subject, NOT of any specific lens. DOF on the Sigma will be the same as DOF on any other 180mm lens at the same settings.

The Canon 100mm is a nice lens, but I think a 180mm lens would be much more useful for most macro work and could double as a sports lens. I own the Canon 100mm and really want a 180mm macro.

Frank,

Thanks for the reply, I understand what your are saying, I am interested in understanding is there any difference between a 100mm macro and a 180mm macro??

Or another way to look at it...why buy a 100 vs a 180 macro? I understand the working distance is more with the longer focal lens....but is there anything it the DOF department that makes one 'better' than the other.....yes I know we are splitting hains here, but once you buy its 'bought' :> )

Right now based on Ratphoto, I am looking to buy the 300mm F4 L IS and a close up lens.

I hope I wont be sorry!!!

I am now in a better position to answer this question having just bought and returned the Tamron. Get the Sigma! For all the reasons, see this thread:

I have a Canon 1D and I am ready to take the plunge into macro.

I have been looking at the Tamron and the Sigma.

If you could purchase either one at the same price. Which would it be.

Thank you
