Does anyone have any strong feelings either way about a Sigma 180 3.5 Macro on a 1Ds? Good, bad....?

Depends really, on paper the Tamron looks better, however the Sigma is very sharp, has HSM and is very well built, here is a processed sample converted from 300D Raw and only a very small amount of USM.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I agree with Phil.

Got my Sigma this week and the sharpness is fantastic, even wide open, which amazed me. HSM focussing is brilliant - makes the 105 seem asthmatic. Small flowers at ground level can be captured without bending.

Construction of lens is superb, tripod ring and hood exemplary.

I usually feel that shooting at max aperture is tanatamount to cruelty, but this lens loves it.

Unable to post anything as dramatic as Phil yet, but I did not realize foxgloves have whiskers.

Regards

Jim

LOL! Neither did I!!

Also taken with the Sigma 180 on a D30.

The lens is extremely well built, and very inexpensive. Frankly, I blame any bad photos on my lack of superior technique.

John Shaw said in "Closeups in Nature," (paraphrasing) 'It's hard not to buy a bad macro lens.'

In the comparison at
http://iapf.physik.tu-berlin.de/jbohs/HKO/TUBerlin/dforum/macro/Macro100E.html

the Sigma 180 3.5 Macro looks very unsharp wide open.

Was that lense a lemon or is this common?

Can someone provide us with 100% crops wide open?

Thanks in advance.

Reinhold

I'm sure this comparison will help you on your decision. The Tamron
180mm/3.5 Di looks like the winner, at least in terms of image
quality.

You have to realize that a) this test was done with a 1Ds (shows flaws that you don't notice with 10D/300D/1D, for example the corner sharpness) and b) that wide open at 1:1 is very demanding to any lens. Focused at infinity things would most likely look different. It's not that the Sigma 180mm/3.5 is a bad lens, it's just that the others are better (and cheaper in case of the Tamron). The same goes for the Sigma 105mm/2.8, which certainly is a good lens, but not as good as its competition.

Ok, 1:1 wide open is a very odd combination as on would stop
down to increase DOF. But when used as a tele lense (at near
infinity) wide open what is the performance then?

Can someone provide 100% crops?

Another Question: Is it possible to focus manually when the
lense is in AF mode (I think Canon calls this FTM full-time-manual
focusing)?

The sigma is a very sharp and good lens. As sharp and good as the Canon 180 lens in evrything. It has HSM with FTM. The same as Canons USM. Very solid and good build quality.

Thanks all for the info.

I'm going to give it a try. Any word on using tele-extenders (1.4, 2) with the lens? Did I see somewhere that it would only work with the Sigma extenders, and that to use a canon extender, it needs an extension tube between them?

I have the 1.4x extender and I've used it a couple times with the 180 without a problem. I think the 180 will work with Canon, Tamron, or Kenko extenders without a problem, though.

Well, I am impressed. No sharpening, but did crop a little, add a layer/border shadow.

1Ds, Sigma 180 Macro, 1/250s, F4, iso 250 Handheld. Practically no DOF...

Although this comparison makes the Tamron look pretty good, at F/8 and above, the Sigma looks equal or better. The fact of the matter is that for macro work, wider apertures give such a narrow DOF as to be useless.

If you're going to use the lens for fast moving insects (or as a dual purpose lens for sports), the speed and functionality of the AF also makes a big difference. Here, Sigma is the winner hands down.

Finally, price wise, the Sigma is going on the street for about $560, while the Tamron is closer to $700.

Anyone who can convince me the Tamron is really a better choice, speak up now, because I'm shopping.

I have a Canon 1D and I am ready to take the plunge into macro.

I have been looking at the Tamron and the Sigma.

If you could purchase either one at the same price. Which would it be.

Thank you

Dan

For reasons I stated above, I'd lean toward the Sigma. But, if you intend to use the lens purely for macro and for relatively motionless subjects, the Tamron seems to be an excellent choice.

I've done a lot of macro shooting with my Sigma 180, both on a 10D and 1D MkII. I guess these captures does the talking:

Used the 10D and f-level 20.

Also please let me know the exact model Sigma you are using.

I have been looking at the following:

Sigma Telephoto 180mm f/3.5 EX APO Macro IF HSM

Tamron SP AF180MM F/3.5 Di LD (IF)

I am going for a 180 over the 100 basically for more working space and because everyone says I'll go there eventually

I am retired and on a fixed income so I'll only get one shot at picking the right lens.
