I am still trying to figure out how to use photoshop but I can't seem to find anything in it that will reduce noise. Does anyone know if there is any noise reduction software? Also, I see people say that they "sharpened" their photo a bit. When I try to sharpen in PS I can't see difference. Am I missing something? Thanks for your help :)

THANK YOU SO, SO, MUCH!!! Genece, you have made my day!!! I have always had problems with soft photos from my FZ10. I read the tutorial bythom and tried some of the things that he said intsead of using the other programs that I have to sharpen. I used the PS-ELEMENTS unsharpen mask and followed his instructions. EUREKA!!!! SUCCESS!!! I had used the mask before, but was not using it correctly. I AM IN HEAVEN!!!!!

THANK YOU.......

I use Neat Image for noise reduction, but try to stay o ISO 50 or 100 as much as possible... you can get some great night shots with tripod and manual settings.

Pixort is handy for quick viewing & categorizing good, fair, poor, trash...

IrFanView offers LOTS of useful functionality

oPhoto is the only tool I've found so far which supports cropping in the correct proportions for standard print sizes 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, (or flipped), or freeform.

All of the above are FREE.

And of course, PhotoShop #7... still learning - LOL

Photoshop is a professional level program that can't be fully mastered in years. It's not for anyone who doesn't want to spend a LOT of time learning it - not for casual users. If you don't use masking and layers PS isn't much better than anything else out there.

Once more, photoshop just gives you a basic tool set. Noise reduction has become highly sophisticated and is better done by other programs. If you know PS, a plug in is the best way to go because it can be integreted w/all of PS's other features- like masking.

If you want maximum results with minimum effort there are a lot of good program out there - some of them free, some of them very cheap.

I'm not sure if it's due to my lack of knowledge however after trying a few noise reduction programs I've found the most effective and easiest method/program to use is a Photoshop/Painshop plugin from Alien Skin Software called 'JPEG Repair', check the link below:

http://www.alienskin.com/idoc/idoc_filters.html

There is a 30 day free so it's worth a try. Since installing this program I use Photoshop with this filter and the 'shadow/highlight' adjustment more than anything else.

i use helicon and really like it.
i am still VERY GRATEFUL for the tutorial about sharpening in photoshop.
that has been more than fantastic for me.
i LOVE THIS FORUM!!!!!!!!!

It seems very good.

Any experts here who can comment on the quality of this noisefilter
vs others?

I found NoiseWare a little easier to use, although maybe a little strong at the default setting. The results below were just from the default setting:

Agreed. It certainly looses detail at the default setting.
But it is very easy to use and quick - so encourages experiment.

I love the way the original and processed images overlay each other with a click - great way to compare, rather than in a windows side by side.

Great free/shareware products either way - Helicon and Noiseware.

Thanks for the links
