Spider Macro (pic)

Nice shot, Joe. I'm surprised by how colorful it is. Probably because I don't tend to get to close to them in my everyday experiences ;-) Sharpness is top-notch.

I tried my hand at a macro of a spider hanging upside down on its
feathery web. It was a pretty small spider.

I'm not David Chin, but how'd I do?

Even though I really hate spiders, I still think it is a wonderful shot! Like Dawn, I guess I don't get close enough to them to really see the colors.

The legs all seem different lengths. Is this because of the angle, or does the spider have the capability of compressing or lengthening their length??? Nice clear shot. Joan

stop to "smell the roses", so to speak. But in trying to photograph a bee, this colorful spider caught my eye. The Macro world is so interesting!

the legs are all the same length. The spider was sitting in (or on) its web, showing me its belly. The outstretched legs (toward the upper left), I think, were monitoring web tension and vibration. The others were all on different strands, likely providing both support and web-monitoring functions. If you look very closely, you can see some of the very fine web strands.

Thanks for your comments.

just a stair step to a playhouse in the back yard. With the shallow depth of field provided by the aperture of f/3.7 and the realtive large distance to the stair, the background was nicely blurred.

I used a shutter speed of 1/500 and an SB-50DX external flash with exposure compensation set at -3.0 and Stofen white diffuser to provide light to highlight the subject, but minimize background exposure.

Thanks for the FCB suggestion. I had not thought about touching the background.
Very nice. Watch out, David!

What's the background, by the way? Looks like it would lend itself
to some FCB-style manipulation.

...the composition.

Assuming that the picture you've posted is a crop of the original, I'm just suggesting that the crop should show some more space in front (to the left) of the spider and a little less to the left.

As I can see, looking at you PBase-gallery, you almost allways place the object of interest in the center of the frame. Sometimes the picture is more pleasing/interesting to the viewer if the object of interest is placed off-center. And I think the spider-macro would be more pleasing to look at if the spider was placed a little more to the right in the frame.
Hope this made sense...:-) My English often betrays my intentions...

Respectfully
Christian.
Maybe a little more space in front of the spider instead of behind?
I don't understand what you mean.

Thanks.
