Do any of you own this and use it with the 1dmk2?

Is the dof difficult to live with?

Can this lens be used wide open (5.6) and is it sharp at 5.6?

I want to buy the 500 f4 but the $$$ is holding me back for now.

I think Ill dump my 16-35 and basically trade it for this lens.

I only use my 24-70 since I bought it and the mk2. (sharp wide angle )

Well, this lens has been discussed very thoroughly in many previous threads. But here are my 1-month experience with this lens.
  • It's great for widelife and sports shots; especially if you need the reach.
  • This lens is sharp. PERIOD.
  • DOF: That's a difficult question to answer. It depends on how much light you have, the subject size, the effect you want, static/moving subject, etc. But, shallow DOF, even at f5.6 has given me very nice pictures.
  • With sufficiently (not ridiculously) high shuttle speed, I have been hand holding my shots.

I also have had this for a month after selling my 100-400 and find it to be exceptionally sharp. The following are hand held with very litte USM

I (still) haven't got my 1D2 yet, but I have the 400/5.6.

I love this lens. I would love to see the IS version of it. That said. If you don't need the 400, I'd go for the 300/4 IS. I will sell the 400 and get the 300 when I finally have the 500.

The 5.6 is a pain sometimes, but it's a trade off. I don't know why we don't get a normal 400/4 (no do)

Cheers

this lense at 5.6 is going to be sharper than most of the lenses you have stop down. To shoot handheld you have to be under bright sun light otherwise have a tripod or monopod.

For me this lense was more useful than the 300/4 and I have been very happey in the past few weeks that I have owned it.

Here are some samples shots:
